freeware VSTi MED editor

freeware VSTi MED editor

2008-01-31 by staplesyrup

Hi.

I've made a pluggo VSTi editor which mirrors and displays the state of the evolver, and can
be controlled from any level. i've been testing it in Live, which doesnt support sysyex, so i
also made a network patch to deal with the sysex data. connect up your evolver as with the
other editors, , select the right ports on the network patch, and you should be done. its only
OS X at the moment. email me at staplesyrup@... about bugs/features. you'll need to
install pluggo, and Max runtime (i think).

get it here

It should be easy enough to get it working on Windows. I'll let you know when i've compiled
it.

this seems interesting.

i've had nothing but problems with pluggo in the past, but i gave this
a try since i'd really like a vst editor for the evolver.

and: no luck. pluggo locks its vsti directory ("read only" and it
won't allow lifting the restriction) on install ... thus, i can't copy
the MED .dll over.

So I have just been saying how I prefer the evolver's own interface to
an editor...
but I still want to give this a go, I'm not afraid to try different tools =D

Anyways, I gave it a shot last night...
I'm using it in ableton on OSX leopard
I am able to send and receive MIDI (the lights flash when dumping,
both on the evolver & the editor)

but It's not actually loading anything to/from the evolver...
not sure what i need to do to set it up, and it's wierd since I know
there is at least some form of communication.
i have midi send and receive both set to 'all' on evolver

if it's working correctly, is it a realtime editor, or do you have to
dump constantly?
thanks, i've just been curious!

tangent:
is there a good and simple way to copy 1 program (like a blank or default)
to a number of other locations?
I want to set up 4 different kinds of default programs (for working in
different ways) and fill each bank with these defaults... but it would
be nice if there was an easy way to copy them rather than resaving
4x128 times...

Re: freeware VSTi MED editor

2008-02-05 by staplesyrup

First off, have you followed the updated instructions on my blog? youve installed plugoo,
Max runtime, put the Meditor.vst in your pluggo folder?

the UDP.app must be loaded up to allow sysex communication, and the MEditor vst open
in Live.

next, the "dump" button requests an "all parameter dump" from the evolver, in case you
have disconnected the evolver for some reason. you shouldnt have to use it often. in fact
it doesnt really need to be there.
the editor should automatically request all evolver parametres whenever it is loaded up,
or whenever you change program on your evolver, or change program from the editor (top
right).

try changing the filter cutoff on the evolver. the filter cutoff on the editor should move.
adjusting the filter cutoff on the editor should be mirrored on the evolver itself.

If you change program on the evolver, all the parameters on the editor should change to
show the state of the evolver.

yes its realtime control, you can automate all the parameters form Live , like you would a
softsynth.
A bonus of using the VST parameters is you can use the VST programs in Live to save a
load of evolver paramteter sets which can be recalled without having to save them as
programs on your evolver.

as i said its not a librarian itself, but you can use copy and paste to move programs around
slots.

good luck!

James

Hi James!

A very interesting thing you've made there.
Unfortunatly, I can't get it running, too.

Using WinXP, installed Max/MSP and Pluggo, loaded up the UDP app,
loaded up Live 7 and dragged in the MEditor.dll from the Pluggo folder.
The window appears, but nothings working (yes, Evolver is connected
both ways)
Also, i had to deactivated my MIDI Interface in Live, otherwise
Max/MSP couldn't open the midi port.

I hope that's just some Windows buzz.

Hi there DaddyAdv

first, thanks for trying out the editor.

Have you read my latest blog post?

www.headermunge.blogspot.com/

unfortunately i realised there are additional objects to install, to
get the VSTi working. I didn't realise this at first because i forgot
i am using custom external objects installed for Pluggo and Max/MSP.
my current version of the VSTi uses these objects, so you'll also need
to install them to get it to work. my blog explains how to install
them in the Pluggo support folder. the objects are created by Peter Elsea.

to be honest i'm close to abandoning the thing, until i can make
something easier for people to install, probably by removing all
custom objects in the VSTi (extra coding for me!). however if you
follow all the steps on my blog, it should work. i have it working on
OS X and Windows XP.

good luck! you are nearly there!

James

Re: freeware VSTi MED editor

Hi James!

It's working!
That LObjects we're missing, got it running right after putting them in.
Thats some really cool stuff you made! Respect and lots of thanks!

So much for the kudos, here's my bit of constructive criticism:

1. The interface is quite complicated, takes some time to come by
My idea: would it be possible to arrange the controls in the same
manner as they are on the Evolvers Matrix ?
It would work perfectly for me, as I'm used to handle the matrix
control and "know" where most of the parameters sit.

2. As the MAX/Msp App occupies the MIDI-Interface, I can't use it in
Live, which is kindof pointless when working with the Evolver, but
that's maybe just my one-channel MIDI interface. Come to think of it,
I could use some virtual MIDI ports. I'll try that soon.

Anyway, really really a great piece of free(!) software you did!

over the next few days., please check my blog for updates! i will get
this damn thing working!

Re: freeware VSTi MED editor

2008-02-19 by sophus14

I have just tried the MEDitor version 2 and it works even in Logic!
The layout of the knobs could have been better but it's nice anyway.
Is it possible to have it running without UDP2 open?

Re: freeware VSTi MED editor

2008-02-19 by staplesyrup

hey, glad it works.

1. the controls layout is copied from the mono evolver keyboard , rather than the desktop
evolver, because the keyboard version has the controls in the order of the signal path.
they are a little cramped, but i tried to make the interface as small as possible so it
doesn't cover your whole screen.
its as simple as i could make an interface with 128 parameters.
If you want to rearrange the interface I'll give you the MAX patch!

2. I'm not sure why the UDP app is hogging your MIDI port. i am able to use the same port
in Live to send MIDI notes and program changes to the evolver.

there is an updated version of the editor on my blog, only for OS X at present. it loads up
data more reliably, and the installation is much simpler.

I will post further versions as i test this one out.

cheers

As i said the layout is based on the keyboard version of the evolver. its a compromise
between being as small as possible and fitting in 128 parameters! my first version was
about 4 times as big.

Its possible that one could make a plugin for Logic that sends/recieves sysex, as Logic is
better at dealing with that kind of thing than Live. Its tricky, or at least, slow, for me to
test multiple platforms and DAWS though.

In fact you could probably build a pretty nice editor in the Logic Environment! thats what
its for....

but no it won't work without the UDP.app at present. the UDP app channels the sysex
between the VST and the Evolver.
