Highpass Filter noise

2009-09-19 by bigotetenso

Hi,

I just bought an evolver and I note that when you activate the HPF you can here some noise.
something like a low fi / bit reducer effect.

is thais normal?

regards

I think that the highpass filter is a bit noisy. I think that its normal, but I am not totally sure.

Hello there

I think that's normal - it's just the way it is.

Using the HPF to lift a bit of bass out of a patch accentuates higher frequencies at the same time. So for each step up a little more hiss comes along at the top end. Anu Kirk refers to this in his brilliant Evo guide book.

Depending what else is going on in the patch settings, the high frequencies coming in can become a bit gritty, even artifacty. Is that what you're getting?

You could look at where the low-pass filter is set, resonance level, feedback level and so on - also whether you're using FM on the digital oscillators; there are places where frequencies that may be lying dormant suddenly get outed by the HPF.

Personally I don't really touch the HPF because it doesn't do fun things like the LPF does - for bass control I prefer to use outboard EQ. One thing it is good for, however, is to inject a bit of extra fizz into white noise or FM by using an LFO or mod controller directed to the HPF.

All best,

S
