The Roland meshes have foam columns; Roland was the first major company to use them. Pintechs began as Roland-compatibles. They are made in Rolands' image, and Pintech pays Roland a licensing fee to make its own woven heads for use with a center-mounted, foam-based piezo. Even though most mesh pads are in the Roland style, they do not all trigger the same way. Most of the modules on the market have enough sensitivity control to handle whatever users throw at them. Although Yamaha modules are a little sensitivity-challenged with other companies' pads, they can accommodate many of the simple ones fairly well. But certain piezo placements in other companies' components don't allow enough signal on Yamaha's terms, a few of them incorrigibly. The Pintechs require flipping the DIP switch to boost the signal, but unfortunately past the middle ground. Hence, the pot. It's entirely possible that the Yamaha module will be more forgiving a Roland mesh head (though probably not the rim), but IMO the price is prohibitive.
