I`m also not an expert in this, but have had these troubles as well with other equipment. So more likely is that you have used some badly soldered, faulty or even wrongly connected cables. Check all connectors and make sure that the internal shield inside the cable is (if at all) only connected at the side of the signal generating unit! Lots of noise problems are generated by this, especially when you switch to XLR during the signals travel..... Good luck, Wolfgang
