Around the time when Sherpa sent me their snare to review, I thought
that it might be a good idea to review a Koby product as well. Koby
was still a new company and relatively difficult to engage. I
subsequently heard favorable comments from a few people in the UK. The
traditional problem with mesh pads and Yamaha electronics, however, is
that even though they collaborate to make noise, the dynamics aren't
always wide enough for everyone's liking, mainly because Yamaha
doesn't incorporate the requisite sensitivity settings into its
modules for mesh pads. The reason that Yamaha doesn't do mesh is long
and involved, but suffice it to say that Roland won that particular
battle. When this group had a closer relationship with Pintech,
Pintech flirted with the idea of fitting a sensitivity control on its
ConcertCast pads to help mate with the DTX modules, but a change of
direction seemed to kill that plan. Koby's personnel are apparently
quite accessible. You might ask if they've tried their snares with
Yamaha equipment. Keith has a Pintech; he'll be glad to tell you how
it works. Years ago, I found Pintechs ran very hot through the
DTXpress, making softer sounds almost impossible to get without
inserting a pot somewhere in line.
