Koby snare

2003-03-26 by leehunwick

Hi Guys,

Just to let you know that i have been speaking with Koby Drums
Liverpool England and he has told me that his Mesh Snare pad will
work on "JUST" the snare output of the DTX 2 Brain if used with a
stereo lead supplied with the Pad.This is great as from my
understanding most snares utilise two inputs.
Koby drums can be contacted on 0151 709 8141 just ask for Colin.

Lee,

That's great, and puzzling--if the Koby mesh heads are indeed true
dual zones (two separate piezos for body and rim). Or are they
stereo pads (a piezo for the body and a membrane switch for the rim,
like the rubber Yamahas)? Since the technologies are different, they
would not seem to work the same way through the module.

Koby snare

I currently own a DTXplorer and want to upgrade the snare to a 2 zone
mesh pad. Have heard a lot of good things about the one made by Koby.
Does anyone have any experience of these?

Around the time when Sherpa sent me their snare to review, I thought
that it might be a good idea to review a Koby product as well. Koby
was still a new company and relatively difficult to engage. I
subsequently heard favorable comments from a few people in the UK. The
traditional problem with mesh pads and Yamaha electronics, however, is
that even though they collaborate to make noise, the dynamics aren't
always wide enough for everyone's liking, mainly because Yamaha
doesn't incorporate the requisite sensitivity settings into its
modules for mesh pads. The reason that Yamaha doesn't do mesh is long
and involved, but suffice it to say that Roland won that particular
battle. When this group had a closer relationship with Pintech,
Pintech flirted with the idea of fitting a sensitivity control on its
ConcertCast pads to help mate with the DTX modules, but a change of
direction seemed to kill that plan. Koby's personnel are apparently
quite accessible. You might ask if they've tried their snares with
Yamaha equipment. Keith has a Pintech; he'll be glad to tell you how
it works. Years ago, I found Pintechs ran very hot through the
DTXpress, making softer sounds almost impossible to get without
inserting a pot somewhere in line.

I purchased a Koby 2 zone snare about a year and a half ago, and my
first experience was good. I would however say that I'm not that
impressed with the dual zone. The snare trigger is fine, once you get
your trigger set up as you like it, but the rim trigger is next to useless.

My solution to this was to use inputs 9/10 for the snare, and split the
cable between the Koby pad and a single zone yamaha pad positioned next
to the snare set up with the rim shot sound.

Having said that, I have since purchased 3 more Koby pads and replaced
my rubber toms. It's a much more wrist friendly playing style, and the
feel is similar to my accoustic kit, so my practice sessions
are more a kin to live. Or as close as it's going to get :-)

Hope this helps
Nic

Thanks for all of your help - I'm going to have a word with the guys
from Koby and get the pad. Will let you know how I get on.

Cheers
