As far as I know, the Alesis is just a trigger - it has no sounds - so without a computer it will be very quiet.  The DTXpress is dual function - it has its own sounds but by plugging it into a computer with MIDI you can also trigger drum software (and therefore get different sounds) as well as record.  What you record through MIDI is not the actual DTXpress sounds - just what you hit and when, but you could use an audio recorder for recording the actual DTXpress sounds.
