Kick pad problem

2000-01-13 by Rolf Baehr

Andy, Aaron and all,

Well, I did some experimenting on the kick pad last night... vibration
doesn't seem to be it. Holding the tower still while kicking it yielded
same results. Also placing it on different material (thicker rugs etc)
didn't make a difference. Moving the beater to strike a different part of
the pad... again no change. Listening closely, it was never really missing
a beat, but the volume of the output would vary drastically. Being careful
to make each stroke equal, it would go from full volume to about 1/4 volume
and back again - no set pattern to the changes.

So, started messing with the trigger settings. Seems that when I got to the
Self Rejection and Rejection settings, and made them both very low values (0
or 1) then the problem seemed to get better or go away completely. I wonder
if the characteristics of the pad changes over time and use, especially
since this has happened twice to me. Has anybody out there had the same
experience?

Yamaha tech support was of no help whatsoever - very disappointed in them.
Basically he says "what's the problem... it's under warranty, send it back
for a new one". It would be nice if they had some suggestions on what might
be going on, and what to look for. Then again, maybe I'm the only one
seeing this.

Anybody have any experience with a different kick pad on this set? Or even a
beaterless pedal like the Drum Tech "Fat Pedal"? When they were getting me
a replacement for the first one, the drum store gave me one of those D/T
(Drum Tech) pads, the big round ones. It was a used one they had, and looks
like it had been used alot, but I plugged it in and off it went and never
missed a beat. I felt it was a more comfortable pad to play, maybe a touch
too soft, but better than the rock hard trigger on the Yamaha tower. Any
comments on other kick setups would be appreciated.

Thanks again to all for the suggestions for my problem! Keep the good stuff
coming.

Rolf
