Kick pad problem

Kick pad problem

2000-01-13 by Rolf Baehr

Andy, Aaron and all,

Well, I did some experimenting on the kick pad last night... vibration
doesn't seem to be it. Holding the tower still while kicking it yielded
same results. Also placing it on different material (thicker rugs etc)
didn't make a difference. Moving the beater to strike a different part of
the pad... again no change. Listening closely, it was never really missing
a beat, but the volume of the output would vary drastically. Being careful
to make each stroke equal, it would go from full volume to about 1/4 volume
and back again - no set pattern to the changes.

So, started messing with the trigger settings. Seems that when I got to the
Self Rejection and Rejection settings, and made them both very low values (0
or 1) then the problem seemed to get better or go away completely. I wonder
if the characteristics of the pad changes over time and use, especially
since this has happened twice to me. Has anybody out there had the same
experience?

Yamaha tech support was of no help whatsoever - very disappointed in them.
Basically he says "what's the problem... it's under warranty, send it back
for a new one". It would be nice if they had some suggestions on what might
be going on, and what to look for. Then again, maybe I'm the only one
seeing this.

Anybody have any experience with a different kick pad on this set? Or even a
beaterless pedal like the Drum Tech "Fat Pedal"? When they were getting me
a replacement for the first one, the drum store gave me one of those D/T
(Drum Tech) pads, the big round ones. It was a used one they had, and looks
like it had been used alot, but I plugged it in and off it went and never
missed a beat. I felt it was a more comfortable pad to play, maybe a touch
too soft, but better than the rock hard trigger on the Yamaha tower. Any
comments on other kick setups would be appreciated.

Thanks again to all for the suggestions for my problem! Keep the good stuff
coming.

Rolf

Kick pad problem

2001-05-21 by Jay Welch

I have had my DTXpress for about 3 months. Just yesterday my kick drum started having some problems. The volume has become very low relative to the other pads and on some hits it will not sound at all. I have the volume on the back of the kick drum all the way up and the volume on the dtxpress unit is all the way up. I switched out the cable to see if that was the problem and got the same result. ; It acts the same way on any kit I select. All of the other pads sound fine.
Is it possible that the pad has gone bad? If so how long should they last if I average an hour a day playing?
Thanks,
Jay

Did they tell you what the problem was? Did it just start happening all of
the sudden on your kit? I guess it was not a drum pad issue if it was sent
back.

Thanks,
Jay

I had exactly the same problem a month ago, so I took it back to the
music shop and they sent it away for repair, it took two weeks but
everything is fine now.

Simon,

Thanks for your help. It gives me a place to start. I was not sure if it
were a problem with the pad or the DTXpress unit itself. I will take it to
a dealer and have them test the tower.

RE: [DTXpress] Re: Kick pad problem

2001-05-21 by Simon Rowe

Jay

I think it went over a period of time as I was having to Hit the Bass
harder and harder to produce the same sound, at first I thought it was a
settings problem, but after my friend had a go (he owns DTXpress too)he
said there was something wrong. The guy in the shop tried the tower out
and immediately said it was defective. I opened the tower up before I
took it to the shop but I could see nothing visibly wrong, so I guessed
the Piezo pick up had broke? Not good news, try playing for 2 weeks
with no bass pedal. I tried re assigning the HH pedal in place of the
bass but it isn't the same.

 Good Luck

Kick pad problem

2001-12-11 by Rolf Baehr

You will see in the archives that I had also written in about problems with
the stock kick tower with this set. Yes, all of a sudden, it would start
missing beats, no matter how hard or soft you hit it. Finally took it back
to the drum store where I got it... they hooked it up to their set, and it
failed for them too. Got me a new one.. that one worked for a couple of
months then started doing the same thing. Took that one back, and they gave
me credit toward a different kick pad, which I absolutely LOVE... it's the
S&S Stealth ST7000. Not only has it worked flawlessly, it also is quite
small, uses a reversed beater, and so I keep my pedal connected to it, just
unplug it and the whole setup fits nicely into my gig box. It ALSO solves
all the complaints everybody has about their kick being too loud
mechanically. It's very quiet, and very comfortable to play. See more at:

Hope that helps!

Rolf
