For once, we're getting more snow than you, but you may have more Al- Quaeda cells. Please be patient with me, I > KNOW I am DENSE, just wish it would come faster for > me...will wait for your response... The "N=" setting is for midi note number. Stay on that line for a moment. As you scroll up from 0, you'll notice that the module notifies you when midi numbers are unavailable because they already have a preset use. I forget the exact terminology (I'm flying blind here; I don't have the module). When you get to the first midi number that comes up as available, stay with it (and remember it). It might be around 15; that will be the note number for the cymbal voice that we're about to assign. Go to the next line, "=K/000 NO ASSIGN," which means "nothing assigned from the kick drum list"; change the K to C, for cymbal; and write in the number of the ride voice that you want from the list under "C: Cymbal" in the back of the Yamaha manual. This number IS NOT a midi note number; it is simply Yamaha's own notation for voices. The actual midi note number is the one on the line above; it will be the one that the kat stores so that it can access the associated Yamaha cymbal voice. Presumably, you have all of your inputs on the DTX filled; that's why you bought the midikiti. Assign the cymbal that you selected in the utility menu (C/???) to one of inputs 2-10 in the voice menu of kit #80; it doesn't matter which one you choose, as long as it has a pad connected to it. Now check to make sure that the midi note number assigned to that cymbal in kit 80's voice menu is the one that you chose in the utility menu. Assuming that's ok, when you hit the pad connected to that input on the DTX, and midi note is the active parameter on the kat, you should see that note number flash on the kat's face. Now you can dive into the kat manual for gain etc and make further parameter adjustments in the utility menu of the DTX, as I outlined in my previous post. Let's stop right there so that you can digest and utilize this info. Here's a brief lesson in terminology. Midi note numbers stand for a particular voice that various midi-capable instruments and modules can use to obtain the same sound. They are not to be confused with the numbers that Yamaha uses to identify the voices in the back of the DTX manual; these numbers apply to the Yamaha module only. Confusing fact: Yamaha's midi numbers in the preset kits are not attached to specific voices but to specific inputs. That is, every input from 1-10 in the module has a particular midi number assigned to it. If you don't use the utility menu to assign specific midi note numbers to voices, not inputs, then pads connected to the kat will access different voices when you change kits on the DTX, even though the midi note number stays the same. Remember it this way: The changes in the utility menu release the midi note numbers from the DTX inputs, each of which can have as many different voices as the DTX has kits, and attach them to voices instead, allowing devices like the kat to access only the one desired, instead of the variety of voices associated with a particular input in all of the kits.
