MidiKITI Programming Help...ED...HELP!!

MidiKITI Programming Help...ED...HELP!!

2003-02-17 by jadiebooshkie <jadiebooshkie@yahoo.com>

Ed..I want to move my visulite 18 inch ride to the midiKITI, I
wanted to use the one sound I have in my personal user kit for it,
but I know it has 2 sounds (bell and ride sounds)..I have the Y
connector, but Hosa sent the wrong one, I got a stereo male to 2
stereo females, and I needed the stereo male to to mono females, the
guy at the store said it might work, they are reordering the YPP117.
I plugged in the KITI, I have my midi cables connectec to midi
in/midi out on both...WHICH MIDI OUT channel should I use on the
KITI..there are 2 MIDI OUTS, the book only shows a diagram and
doesn't tell which midi out to use, so I plugged it into the midi
out outlet next to the midi in outlet. i tried a preset kit, and
found a ride sound that changed my #9 pad from the tom sound to a
ride cymbal. I then used the Hosa YPP118 and connected my a mono
plugs from the visulite into inputs 1 and 2 on the KITI. I went to
the trigger edit of my preset user kit..named it MIDI KITI, and
found the sound for pad 9 that changed from tom to ride...the note
was #053. I pressed the AUTOTRAIN on the KITI, and pushed the
trigger voice button, theo the 0-5-3 lights were lit in sequence. I
didn't know what to do next. I read the KITI manuel, and it said if
I hit the trigger (cymbal) it should play that note...0-5-3 which
was a ride cymbal voice. Well I hit the cymbal and if I hit it
hard, I am getting a tomR sound!!! What the heck am I doing wrong?
I wanna assign a ride cymbal, and a bell voice to the KITI...HOW DO
I GET THESE VOICES TO SOUND FOR MY RIDE. Ther's gotta be something
I am missing here, the DTX module is set to ch 10...do I need to be
in a UTILITY MODE PAGE? Now I have a tom assigned, and how do I
change it back? For now, I just want to move one crash and my dual
zone visulite ride to the KITI. Is there something I press on the
KITI to save that voice to trigger 1. Also, when I plugged in the 2
mono jacks from the Vis. cymbal, I noticed that only trigger 1 was
lit. Shouldn't trigger 2 be lit also? Or is this because the Y
adapter is wrong, I should have the stereo male to 2 mono females
attaching to 2 mono males into the KITI....can ya help me out? Jade

Hi Jade,

Snowing enough for ya? I'll answer best as I can for now below.

The stereo females won't work so let's treat the visulite as a
single zone ride for now and forget about the bell. If you can
connect the bow to the kat successfully, you won't have trouble
later with the bell.

It doesn't matter which midi out you use. At this point, make sure
that the visulite bow is connected to an input on the kat.

i tried a preset kit, and

You've gone off track. I'm glad that you got so far as to see the
note number displayed on the kat. But now you need to be in a user
kit on the DTX for the next steps. In the interest of simplicity,
take any kit, whether preset or one of your own, and use it to
create user kit #80, or just scroll through the kit numbers until
you reach the last one, #80, which you can name midikiti in the
voice edit menu sometime if you are so inclined. In that kit 80,
assign the voice that you'd like for the bow of the visulite to one
of the pads connected to any input on the DTX. For example, assign
the cymbal sound C21 (or whatever you prefer) to whatever pad is
connected to input 6, or whatever input you like.

Now, remember when I told you that you'd need a new note number for
that voice rather than the one already assigned in the voice menu?
If you stay with the default number, you will get whatever sound is
associated with that INPUT in all of the preset kits. That's because
the DTX assigns numbers to inputs, not voices, unless you explicitly
assign numbers to voices instead. Since the numbers go to inputs
rather than voices, whenever you switch kits, the number--053 in
your case--will refer to a different voice. What you want to do is
make sure that when the number stays the same, so does the voice. My
next paragraph shows you how.

I read the KITI manuel, and it said if
> I hit the trigger (cymbal) it should play that note...0-5-3 which
> was a ride cymbal voice. Well I hit the cymbal and if I hit it

something

You're getting the tom sound because you haven't specified that your
chosen voice should have its own number, rather than an input number
that goes with different voices in different kits. Go into section
5, Map, in the utility menu. The first page concerns voice. Increase
the "N" value (note number) until you get one that is free. On the
next line, assign that free note number to cymbal C21 (or whichever
one you chose in the last paragraph). The following pages allow you
to set parameters (volume, pan, tuning, etc.) for this midi voice
that you've specified for the kat to use by note number. You can
come back to these parameters. For now, go back into user kit 80 and
see whether the input on the kat with your visulite ride now takes
the new number when you hit the appropriate pad connected to the
DTX. Voila! Now when you hit the visulite, the new note number
should be displayed on the kat's face. It will no longer matter
which kit you choose on the DTX; you'll always get the cymbal sound
that you've asscociated with that number. What remains is to follow
the manual to set gain etc. on the kat and to finish setting those
parameters in the utility menu for the voice that you want the kat
to access when you hit the visulite.

Also, when I plugged in the 2
> mono jacks from the Vis. cymbal, I noticed that only trigger 1 was
> lit. Shouldn't trigger 2 be lit also? Or is this because the Y
> adapter is wrong, I should have the stereo male to 2 mono females

The other input on the kat didn't work because the adapter is wrong.
There's a fairly simple logic to what I've outlined. I haven't gone
into detail about what to do on the kat after you get the note
number right. The first few pages of the manual should get you
there. Read them carefully again until it all sinks in.

At the risk of confusing you, the point of creating a midikiti kit
#80 is to give you a convenient place to program pads that you can
hit to convey note numbers to the kat via the DTX midi out. The kat
in turn uses its midi out to access the voice info that you
programmed into the DTX for that note number. I'll have some
suggestions for how you might use the kat without having to do much
fussing (many of them can be found in my reply to a post of
under'heaven's earlier this month). But get this much down first;
then you can change or expand as you wish. If you have more
questions, try to keep them simple so that we can tackle them one at
a time.

Ed...Yah it's snowing here, but not like on the
coast...I live between Buffalo and Rochester,NY in a
small rural farming community, so we are only supposed
to get 4 or 5 inches.
Now that UTILITY MODE...on the MAP...the Page you're
referring to is it under section 5-1.
UT MAP N= OC-2
=K/000 NO ASSIGN?
So while I am on this MAP Page, I would set the note
number for the ride bow (on my user kit I created, I
have note #49 Category 040) RIGHT NOW I HAVE NOTHING
PLUGGED INTO OUTLET 6 ON THE DTX, so I would have to
assign this cymbal sound to pad#9. I could COPY that
setting to say INPUT 7, then when and save it to user
kit #80? Am I following you right?
You say I would have to assign a different note #
other than the #49 on this UT MAP N= **would the N= be
an INPUT or a NOTE NUMBER? This is where I GET
CONFUSED....and Where it says K+NO ASSIGN...Would I
assign whatever the 040 Ride cymbal is or would that
be the input number? Please be patient with me, I
KNOW I am DENSE, just wish it would come faster for
me...will wait for your response...Thanks!!....Jade

For once, we're getting more snow than you, but you may have more Al-
Quaeda cells. Comments follow:

That's it.

The "N=" setting is for midi note number. Stay on that line for a
moment. As you scroll up from 0, you'll notice that the module
notifies you when midi numbers are unavailable because they already
have a preset use. I forget the exact terminology (I'm flying blind
here; I don't have the module). When you get to the first midi
number that comes up as available, stay with it (and remember it).
It might be around 15; that will be the note number for the cymbal
voice that we're about to assign. Go to the next line, "=K/000 NO
ASSIGN," which means "nothing assigned from the kick drum list";
change the K to C, for cymbal; and write in the number of the ride
voice that you want from the list under "C: Cymbal" in the back of
the Yamaha manual. This number IS NOT a midi note number; it is
simply Yamaha's own notation for voices. The actual midi note number
is the one on the line above; it will be the one that the kat stores
so that it can access the associated Yamaha cymbal voice.

Presumably, you have all of your inputs on the DTX filled; that's
why you bought the midikiti. Assign the cymbal that you selected in
the utility menu (C/???) to one of inputs 2-10 in the voice menu of
kit #80; it doesn't matter which one you choose, as long as it has a
pad connected to it. Now check to make sure that the midi note
number assigned to that cymbal in kit 80's voice menu is the one
that you chose in the utility menu. Assuming that's ok, when you hit
the pad connected to that input on the DTX, and midi note is the
active parameter on the kat, you should see that note number flash
on the kat's face. Now you can dive into the kat manual for gain etc
and make further parameter adjustments in the utility menu of the
DTX, as I outlined in my previous post. Let's stop right there so
that you can digest and utilize this info.

Here's a brief lesson in terminology. Midi note numbers stand for a
particular voice that various midi-capable instruments and modules
can use to obtain the same sound. They are not to be confused with
the numbers that Yamaha uses to identify the voices in the back of
the DTX manual; these numbers apply to the Yamaha module only.

Confusing fact: Yamaha's midi numbers in the preset kits are not
attached to specific voices but to specific inputs. That is, every
input from 1-10 in the module has a particular midi number assigned
to it. If you don't use the utility menu to assign specific midi
note numbers to voices, not inputs, then pads connected to the kat
will access different voices when you change kits on the DTX, even
though the midi note number stays the same. Remember it this way:
The changes in the utility menu release the midi note numbers from
the DTX inputs, each of which can have as many different voices as
the DTX has kits, and attach them to voices instead, allowing
devices like the kat to access only the one desired, instead of the
variety of voices associated with a particular input in all of the
kits.

Re: [DTXpress] Re: MidiKITI Programming Help...ED...HELP!!

2003-02-18 by jadeiebooshkie

Here's what I have done... I changed my user kit
number to 80-went into voice and copied the ride
setting to pad 9...when I hit pad 9 it sounds like a
ride...the Visulite is plugged into KITI input 1. I
went into UTILITY Voice here are my settings:
UT MAP N=10A#-2
C=/024
I then went to the KITI and pressed AUTO TRAIN-hit pad
#9 and the numbers blinking were 1-1-3!!! I tapped
the Visulite (plugged into KITI) and the friggin'
thing sounds like a high pitched bell/ then it sounded
like pad#9's original setting in my user kit...which
was a 3rd tom!! WHAT the hell am I doing
wrong...also...should I copy this UT MAP Copy from=1
Acoustic kit??
How do I move the cymbal from user kit 80 to the
KITI...and WHY is it flashing a 1-1-3 instead of the
0-2-4 that I assigned pad 9? Am I doing something
wrong w/ programming the KITI?....Jade

Re: [DTXpress] Re: MidiKITI Programming Help...ED...HELP!!

2003-02-18 by jadeiebooshkie

PS...one more thing....I unplugged the ride from the
KITI and plugged it into input 2 on KITI...I am still
getting the tom sound...that WASN'T a high pitched
noise I heard...it was a tom voice. So my pad 9 that
was my 3rd tom is now on my RIDE...I can't change the
note number on the KITI...it keeps flashing 1-1-3
instead of 0-2-4 or 0-2-6....It's gotta be something I
am doing wrong with the DTX.

Here are my values for the UT Mode
UT SEQ SETUP
MIDI Control=off
Count Switch=off
Sync Mode=auto
Use Tempo=song
Click Mode=manual
UT MAP N=65F...C/026 Rider3
UT MAP N=65F3...Vol=105 Pan=C
UT MAP N=65F 3...Tune C=-5 F=0
The rest I don't think really matter until we get to
UT MAP Copy From=1(flashing) Acoustic Kit

Could ANY of these settings be at fault?
I COPIED the Rider3 voices to pad 9 (is really my 3rd
tom)...but as stated earlier...when I hit pad 9 the
data going into the KITI is not the Rider 3 cymbal
assigned to pad 9...I MUST have screwed something
up!!?........WISH I could GET THIS!!!....Jade

Re: MidiKITI Programming Help...ED...HELP!!

We're getting there.

It doesn't matter which input on the kiti you're using; the midi
note number gets transferred to the kiti's active input, which you
select either by hitting the pad connected to it or scrolling
through the inputs (the green lights) manually on the kiti keyboard.

> UT MAP N=65F...C/026 Rider3

This is the only setting that matters for getting the midi note
information from the DTX to the kiti. Midi note number 65 also has
to show up as the note number for pad 9 when you check in the voice
menu of kit 80. If so, save kit 80 with the button on the front of
the module. If not, don't do anything else until you make these
numbers match; if 65 turns out not to work, try other numbers. Save
kit 80 when you've arrived at a viable note number for C/026 on
input 9, just to make sure that you don't change anything by
mistake. (Acoustic kit 1 is irrelevant to what we're doing. If you
set up the note number for the ride on the kiti correctly, you'll
get the same ride sound for the visulite, no matter what kit on the
DTX you happen to be using).

To keep it simple on the kiti, disconnect everything but the
visulite bow. Hit the visulite to select its input. Now,
press "AUTO" to make "midi note number" the active parameter; three
red lights corresponding to a midi note number (probably not yours)
should be blinking consecutively, with a pause between each complete
cycle. Making sure that your foot is not on either the hi hat
controller or the kick pedal, hit pad 9, C/026, in kit 80; don't
accidentally hit any other pad afterward. After recognizing the
default channel 10, the kiti red lights should start to register 0-6-
5, or whatever your final midi note number turned out to be in the
DTX utility menu. If the correct number flashes, you can continue
to "Gain Auto Train" on p. 34 to adjust the triggers. If it doesn't,
it's back to the DTX to figure out why.

Re: [DTXpress] Re: MidiKITI Programming Help...ED...HELP!!

2003-02-18 by jadeiebooshkie

Here's what I did...I re read your last post...I went
into the UTILITY Menu and FOUND one mistake I made:
I now have these:
UT MAP N=106A#6 (this was listed as no assign)
=C/024 Ride Em (This is for pad 9)

Under VOICE MENU
KIT*In=pad9
Copy To In=pad9
USER KIT 80 pad 9 showed the note 106A#6 with C/024
Ride Em
I unplugged the KITI and replugged it in Visulite is
in input 1 on KITI, input 1 is lit the red lights on
the KITI registered 0-0-1. I tapped the Visulite then
pressed Auto Train on the KITI the 0-0-1 still
flashed, then I hit pad 9 (that's plugged into DTX
channel 9/10)...all the red lights lit up to MIDI NOTE
then the 1-1-3 started to flash, as it did before, not
106 as it should be. When I listen to the visulite in
my headphones, the sound it is picking up is a tom
sound...SOMETHING is not right, and I don't know if
I'M doing something wrong, or if there's something not
set with the DTX or if it's the KITI...I hit pad 9 and
get a cymbal from kit 80, I hit the visulite, and I
get a tom...can you think of anything that may be the
problem...could the 9/10 split input on the DTX be
confusing the KITI?
Thanks for your help and patience with me,
Jade

Are you by any chance hitting the pad on input 10 instead of input
9? Or is there conceivably enough crosstalk when you hit 9 that
another pad's note number is going through? Check to see whether one
of kit 80's other inputs (a tom?) carries note number 113. If so,
see if you can figure out how it's taking over.

Re: [DTXpress] Re: MidiKITI Programming Help...ED...HELP!!

2003-02-18 by jadeiebooshkie

I checked every note for the entire kit, and 113 is
NOT assigned to anything..the other pad connected to
the 9/10 is the cymbal bell pad-that's on 10, and my
other tom was on 9-that's the one reassigned to the
cymbal that should read note 106-not 113. But it's
funny, my tom is now on the cymbal. I wonder if there
is a problem with the KITI?

Re: [DTXpress] Re: MidiKITI Programming Help...ED...HELP!!

2003-02-18 by jadeiebooshkie

Aha! Ed...ther IS CROSS TALK! It is coming from tom2
that sits under my ride, but the note for tom 2 is
47(B1). For 1 second I was able to get a cymbal sound
on the ride...I don't know how to program the KITI...I
would stirke the Visulite-press AUTO TRAIN then hit
pad 9 for the cymbal...it still flashed 1-1-3 si I
used the arrows to make it flash to note 106-what it
SHOULD read, then I pressed SAVE and waited a minute
then I tapped the Visulite, and got the cymbal sound,
but then I lost the cymbal sound, when I tap the pad
hard, that's when I get a high pitched bell sound on
one section of the pad, and if I tap it near the
piezo, that's when I get a tom sound. This should be
easier than this...something isn't right...I have NO
note numbers of 1-1-3 in my kit for any pads. I am
wondering if the KITI needs to be re-programmed? Just
a thought.

Re: MidiKITI Programming Help...ED...HELP!!

2003-02-18 by liberatusvirus <liberatusvirus@yahoo.com>

Let's try this first: Get into midi note auto train and instruct the
kiti to show 106 either by tapping pad 9 or manually by pressing the
down arrow key. Make sure that 106 is the final number flashing.
Don't hit pad 9 again, or anything else on the DTX.

Now go right to Gain Auto Train (p. 34 in the manual) by pressing
auto to make both yellow lights go on. Follow the rest of the
instructions from pp. 34-36. When you're finished, hit the Visu-
lite. Is it right? If not, we'll program the C/024 (N=106) cymbal
sound to another pad in kit 80 and switch the Visu-lite to another
input and do the same thing.

Re: [DTXpress] Re: MidiKITI Programming Help...ED...HELP!!

2003-02-18 by jadeiebooshkie

One of the problems was that MIDI Channel on the KITI
was set to 1!!! I called Mario at AM, he ran me thru
a few things, but needed to see a manuel before we
could get anywhere. He is supposed to call me Wed or
Thurs. I have to be out of town on Wed. for most of
the day, so I will get a chance to re-read the KITI
manuel...Mario thinks it needs to be totally
retrained, probably settings from who ever had it are
over riding what I am trying to do. However, i will
try what you told me. The tom noise I am hearing IS
coming from my 2nd tom...AND V=2 note is 102...funny
how it's flashing 103!
Will keep ya posted, and Thanks, buddy for all your
help!

Re: MidiKITI Programming Help...ED...HELP!!

2003-02-18 by liberatusvirus <liberatusvirus@yahoo.com>

Sometimes the inputs are locked out individually; that's why I
suggested that you try another one. If switching the visulite to
another input does the trick, maybe Mario can tell you how to
retrain the kiti input by input, without having to do a universal re-
initialization to factory settings, so that you won't have to start
everything from scratch again. If he can, you can let me know the
technique.

Re: [DTXpress] Re: MidiKITI Programming Help...ED...HELP!!

2003-02-18 by jadeiebooshkie

Unfortunately, he was at home when he called me, and
he needed to see the manuel (which was at the
factory)..he's going to look at the manuel tomorrow,
and like I said, call me, probably Thurs. I am sure I
will have to call him, as he will be busy, he told me
he was leaving for Fla for 4 days. He told me not to
worry about the auto train, if I assign a midi note, I
can program it in, or should be able to. He was
limited because he didn't have the manuel or a KITI in
front of him. He also suggested I use preset notes
from the DTX that are assigned to the cymbals.
I may end up having to retrain each pad. Like I said,
I AM getting crosstalk from the tom, but I also am
getting a high pitched bell sound (like a bell you
ring) and Mario wasn't surprised, he had me adjust min
vel and max vel. He said probably ALL the settings
had to be retrained/reprogrammed....what a night mare,
I'm in Midi Hell!! This is a whole new game for me,
each pad will have to be reset to max strike/min
strike...which in effect means anything plugged into
the KITI will be an involved process.
I really wonder if most of our problems, as well as my
ignorance, has to do with the unknown settings of the
KITI...WHO knows what it's set for before I got it, ya
know?
In the meantime, I will be asking God for some serious
enlightenment...and THAT'S no joke!!:)
I really won't get a chance to work on it much before
Thursday, as I have to be out of town most of the day
on Wed. If I get back early enough, I will work on
the settings again.
