Kits, Visu-lites, and the new Yamaha module

2003-04-12 by liberatusvirus

Hi Jade,

Since we're talking about kits, I won't feel so bad about posting on
my situation. As a few of you know from my recent sale and other
matters, I decided to move my kit to a Pearl rack, which has created
all sorts of havoc. The Pearl has square tubing, which basically
makes my old warehouse of hardware--Yamaha, Gibralter, Pintech, you
name it--obsolete. Since the Pearl is so limiting in this respect,
it's taken quite a bit of time to get it set up. I won't be finished
until the end of next week. The swap was further complicated by
other matters, not the least of which was a family crisis (like
yours, Jade, ours was also settled by an ultrasound on April 11),
which, thankfully, turned out well.

One problem that this drumming limbo created was a delay in my
review of Visu-lite's Yamaha hi hat. Although I have been able to do
some work on it, I'm waiting for Tom Pickard to finish making Walt's
so that ultimately we can compare notes. For those who are
interested (and I know that Jade has been waiting patiently), my
initial impressions are very favorable. I've done a little minor
tweaking, of the nonelectronic variety, but, to me, playing on a
real hi hat is unbeatable, and Tom has appeared, at first glance, to
have mimicked the action of Yamaha's controllers very successfully.
He has kindly offered to make any changes that we suggest.
Presumably, these would center around the resistor, which at this
point is set at 100k but could go lower. Walt, who is more familiar
with the HH80, may be have a more definitive sense of it.

I had an interesting talk with Ed Morin the other day. He told me
that Yamaha would have released the new module already were it not
for a licensing problem. At any rate, the new Yamaha, which is
slated to appear in late summer, will be sampler-based (which may be
the source of the licensing difficulty).
