Re: [DTXpress] Re: Midi!

It seems that still many of you out there do not know what MIDI is and
what it isn't.

First off... the Korg couldn't possibly transfer ANY sound to a TRUE
sequencer, as a true sequencer only records and plays back MIDI note and
controller info and certain system exclusive messages. There is (or was)
such a thing call midi sample dump (SDS) but it is so old and
antiquated, that it took SOOO long to transfer even the most simple of
sounds, but still could not transfer sounds into devices that do not
support this feature. There was SMIDI too but that seemed to die
quickly. Anyways, the KORG can't do it.

There are sequencer software/ audio tracking softwares such as CuBase,
Logic..etc.. but they will not accept a sample dump through midi SDS or
otherwise. You would have to transfer it by standard audio or disc means
by exporting as a WAV file (you can on the D1600 mkII anyways) into a
sampler then trigger that from your pads. The MIDI specifications on the
D1600 are such that the connection is just for MTC-MMC (time code and
transport control - in/out), mixer controls, and effect control..
that's it, no triggering.

THAT is what I do. (a very simplified version follows.. if anybody would
like full details, send a self addressed envelope.... =) )

I play my DTX pads... the MIDI out from the DTX goes into a Yamaha A3000
sampler module and then from the A3000's MIDI THRU it goes into the IN
on a Kawai XD-5 Drum Synth module. All modules are set to the same MIDI
channel as each other. I program sets on the DTX to play either a DTX
sound or a A3000 sound or an XD-5 sound or any combination therof, by
first assigning a sound on any of the modules to correspond to the MIDI
note number assigned to the desired pad... then if it is NOT going to
use a sound on the DTX, I give the volume setting on that pad (on the
DTX) to zero, the sound would then be produced by the module I want, and
the editing of volume and such would be done on that particular module.
Layering sounds from any combination of the three would be the same,
just I'd adjust the volumes for each as desired.

I use the DTX as a trigger interface for everything from playing music,
to doing a hit-list for sound effect placement in sound editing, kinda
like how the old foley guys used to do it... great fun when I did a
boxing short!

gord.
