You are correct. With software the company that writes it, owns it. 
The people who buy your software in the stores, only "own" the 
physical objects, they do not own the software or programming code. 
The company licenses the software use contingent on the 
specified "End User Licensing Agreement". And most licenses do not 
not allow for reverse engineering, with the exception of some 
freeware apps. I would be pretty upset too if I wrote a program with 
the intention to sale it and somebody started modifying it and 
distributing it, after it was on the market.
