OK, I'm diving into this layering thing too. I'm currently trying
layering the MapleXX toms with the Room2XX toms. I picked Room2
because they seem to have a sharper attack and seem louder (maybe
more compression, I'm not sure). One of the things I've found is
that when you bring in the 2nd layer, you need to pan it out to the
proper place. Is this typical: tom1 pan = L19;   tom2 pan = C;
tom3 pan = R25. Also I see that the tuning on tom2 is C=-2. Also
tom1 Fc = 0;    tom2 Fc = + 19;    tom3 Fc = +14.  My question is do
you typically have to adjust all these settings when you bring in
the 2nd layer, and are there other settings that don't default
properly on the 2nd layer? A couple of other things I've done is to
add +30 to all of the Fc's to get a brighter more cutting sound.
Also on the room2 toms I set the layer balance to +20 for the same
reason. Hope I'm not overkilling anything here. Any opinions?
