Layering?

Layering?

2004-04-10 by boomer535

To those of you that have layered your voices:

Could you list some of your favorite combinations for me to try?

TIA, Ken

Well, my all-time favourite tom settings layer MapleXX with Room1XX
(where XX is replaced by the tom size, so Maple10 layered with
Room1Hi and so on). For my rock/fusion I have MapleXX at 115 and
Room1XX at 90. I vary the proportions by usage, so Jazz kits have
more Maple and less Room1 and so on.

OK, I'm diving into this layering thing too. I'm currently trying
layering the MapleXX toms with the Room2XX toms. I picked Room2
because they seem to have a sharper attack and seem louder (maybe
more compression, I'm not sure). One of the things I've found is
that when you bring in the 2nd layer, you need to pan it out to the
proper place. Is this typical: tom1 pan = L19;   tom2 pan = C;
tom3 pan = R25. Also I see that the tuning on tom2 is C=-2. Also
tom1 Fc = 0; tom2 Fc = + 19; tom3 Fc = +14. My question is do
you typically have to adjust all these settings when you bring in
the 2nd layer, and are there other settings that don't default
properly on the 2nd layer? A couple of other things I've done is to
add +30 to all of the Fc's to get a brighter more cutting sound.
Also on the room2 toms I set the layer balance to +20 for the same
reason. Hope I'm not overkilling anything here. Any opinions?

I still haven't figured out the oddities of where the DTXpress gets
its default settings for pan, coarse and fine tuning and filtering
from for each voice. I don't know if they travel with the voice
or "stick" for each layer on an input, or whether it just makes them
up from time to time. But typically, yes, you will need to at least
check all these things when tinkering. There's nothing quite so mind-
bending as having two layered voices panned to opposite sides of the
soundstage! I once managed to have the hi-hat edge on the left and
the bow on the right. As for where you pan to - well, that's up to
you. I have mine configured as a seven-piece right now (five toms -
using some cheats which I'll describe with some new photos later)
and my soundstage is L15, L5, R5, R15, R25 for the toms. Remember
there's a neat trick in the module to reverse the soundstage for
live playing too. And remember to save the kit regularly. I can
think of fewer things quite so bad for the enamel on your teeth as
spending an hour setting up a kit and then stupidly hitting
the "increment kit" button before saving...

Oh, and remember you can cross-fade layers too. You could arrange it
such that the voices transition from MapleXX on low-velocity hits
through to Room2 to for harder hits. To do this, you'll need to make
sure the "louder voice" is on layer 2.

Thanks again. How about things like decay? I see that in my 1st
layer they were set to tom1,2,3 = 0, -6, -3. In the 2nd layer they
are all set to 0. Should I make both layers follow the 0, -6, -3
setting?

Entirely up to the effect you are after. If you just want the Room2
sounds for attack and the Maple sounds for resonance, you may want
to have the decay faster on the Room2 and slower on the Maple. Your
call.
