what to plug my DTXpress II to?

what to plug my DTXpress II to?

2004-07-20 by daniel_hamekasi

hey guys.

first post, have had the dtxpress II for a year now. have always used
headphones. now I'm thinking of plugging this bad boy into some sort
of amplification system.

so now I'm wondering, what would be better suited for the range of
sounds coming from the kit? a guitar amp or a home amp
(I have a bryston 3B-ST lying around)

don't want to damage any speakers because of the high pitched sounds
of the cymbals or the thumping sound of the bass.

thanks,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Welcome. Of the many home amps that have crossed our path here, the
Bryston is among the very few that could probably do some justice to
e-drum signals without immediate exhaustion, but, as you say, why
risk speakers and quality if you don't have to? A keyboard amp would
be far better than a guitar amp. Boomer's been recommending his
Peavey. The Rolands are popular, too. The bigger the better.

thanks for the quick reply Ed.

Besides the Bryston, I could get my hands on a Peavy TKO-80 (I think
bass) amp.

how would that do?

thanks,
Daniel

P.S. what about the fact that the stx can output stereo but the amps
only accept mono (I assume)

Low wattage and a limited frequency response would rule against it.

The left output is reserved for mono, isn't it? Two amps wouldn't
hurt either.

yeah but it would be sweet to have stereo output.

Though a bass amp would be well suited to provice the "punch" for the
kick drum, most do not have the high-frequency capability to produce the
cymbals. I'd suggest you look at a keyboard amp.

If you don't have much $$$, take a look at the Behringer offerings...
Behringer is somewhat controversial (some love them, some hate them) but
the price/power ratio is good, and if you find a "good" one, you should
be ok. I'd suggest going to a local music store, auditioning one and then
BUY the one you audition, rather than let them get a new one out of a box
in the back. :)

If they offer an "extended warranty" you might want to invest in that as
well since some of the people who have had trouble with the Behringer had
trouble with reliability.... :)

Always wondered what it would be like to have two amps for stereo effects
plus one of those twin 18" subwoofer cabinets for rattling the windows and
doors loose. By the way has anybody here hooked their edrums up through 18"
subwoofers?

I imagine that as you raised the volume, the acoustic energy would cause
the pads to trigger at some point... but boy that would be fun to find
that point! :D
