Expanding DTXpress II

Expanding DTXpress II

2005-01-06 by fionajms

Hi all,
I'm fairly new to electronic drumming and have spotted a DTX expansion
kit. Is this easy to add to the DTXpress? How does amplification
work? I'm using a basic amp at the moment but I'm getting the DMS
Drum Monitor System very shortly. Will it be possible to put both
modules through the monitor? (no idea about monitor systems!)
Anyone got any info for me?
Many thanks
Fiona

Hi Fiona,

Thanks for joining us. The BP-80 and TP-80 pads in the expansion set
will integrate with the DTXpress without any trouble. I'm not sure
how the little rack that comes with them will finally come to roost
in your configuration, but it's not an insurmountable problem in any
case. Am I to understand that you are getting a second module as
well, presumably the DTX v2.0? If so, you should get an inexpensive
mixer to accept the outputs of each module and then run leads from
the mixer to your monitor. How did you come across the DMS amp
system, which doesn't seem to be available in the US? I didn't notice
whether you're from Europe. If you narrow down the questions further,
we can get into more detail.

Hi Ed,
Thanks for getting back to me. The second module will come with the set and
I do believe it is a DTX v2.0 but I'm not 100%. The DMS is from Thomman
cyberstore on the net – they're a German based company but ship all over the
world. The DMS is their own make I think. It is very similar to the Yamaha
monitor system but a fair bit cheaper. This has 3 speakers – 1 large base
monitor and 2 small speakers which mount on the frame. The DTXPress
plugs into a passive frequency switch, which splits the line signal into bass
and mid rear exit (that make sense?) the 3 speakers plug into this. How
would a mixer work with this? Would the mixer be plugged into the two
modules and then the speakers come from the frequency switch?

I'm from a small island just off England – the Isle of Man. There is only one
music store here and it is VERY expensive and holds little stock so I buy all of
my bits online. A good number of people use Thomann and have given
positive reports.

Hi Fiona,

I'm familiar with Thomann and the DMS drum monitor, though I had no
idea who makes it nor seen any evaluation of it. When you get it,
would you give us a bit of a review? We have a lot of British and a
smattering of other European members who are eager to find out about
any available amplification. Yamaha's own monitors have not fared
well on this board.

Your description of the connection between the DTXpress and the
monitor is basically correct. The DMS probably divides the stereo
signal between the satellites and subwoofer via a crossover located
inside the sub cabinet. When you add the mixer, your two modules will
run directly into it, and the stereo output from the mixer will go
directly into the monitor. Anything else that you connect to the
mixer, such as a CD player, can go to the monitor via the same feed.
Depending on how elaborate the mixer is, you can also split the
output or add effects, etc. Incidentally, if you're not familiar
with the DTX module, you'll be surprised at how well appointed it is
relative to the DTXpress module. Keep us informed about your progress.

Hi again,
Thanks for your advice. It's difficult when you have very little knowledge of the
technical do's and donts or cans and cants! I'm looking forward to trying these
things out! The only problem is finding the cash so it may be a while before I
get my DMS! I will reveiw this as soon as i can.
I'll keep you posted.

Fiona
