Why Doesn't The Yamaha's Have A Digital Audio Connection?

Why Doesn't The Yamaha's Have A Digital Audio Connection?

2005-03-01 by zapaxe

Or does Yamaha's DTXtreme have such a digital connection? I just
looked and my Alesis DM Pro has digtal RCA connections.

It seems that a lot of equiptment these days are offering digital
connectivity in their products. Even Gibson is making a Les Paul
guitar with a digital output!

I just bought a Digital Optical cable to connect my Vox ToneLab
guitar amp modeler and will try it next on my Alesis keyboard synth,
and I was thinking it would have been cool to try it on the e-drums
as well.
Though I'll do some experimenting in the future with the DM Pro.

The Dtxtreme IIS has a S/PDIF output jack that sends out the same
audio that is sent out the main stereo output jacks. None of the
other Yamaha modules have it.

Thanks for that info OGD,

That's good to know Yamaha is considering digital connections. It
seems that a lot equiptment these days are.
I was told that Digital Optical is capable of 8 channels and RCA
s/pdif is capable of 2 channels.
Since optical is light and eliminates any EM interference and is
capable of 8 channels, it would be pretty handy to be able to take 8
channels out from the DTXtreme into a recorder from a single digital
cable...If it works that way at all!...?

There is a 8 channel optical connection - ADAT deleoped by Alesis.
If the 'litepipe' (as some call it) is ADAT compatable the unit will have an
ADAT logo on it (like Dolby on tape decks)
Most optical connections a 2 channel, just like the RCA connection.

Here's the bad news, the digital out of the DTXtreme is basically the main
left / right.
You haven't 8 channels to play with.

Hey thanks SEA,

Well, I was expecting that much. I'm not too surprise since I only
heard from someone else that lightpipe is 'capable' of 8 channels.

If in fact, 8 channels are capable with lightpipe I wonder how hard
it would have been for Yamaha to design this digital output in such
a way that would allow 8 channels so that different drums can be
assigned to separate recording tracks?

Of course the use of midi recording and the multi-audio putputs
provided in the DTXtreme would achieve the same thing so...? But one
cable with 8 channels?
