Feel of TP100 and TP65(S)

Feel of TP100 and TP65(S)

2005-09-28 by Jerry

Could anyone describe how the TP100 pad "feels"? How does it compare to
the TP65 AND how does it feel compared to the Mesh head drum?

Does it have a little more give than a Vic Firth Practice pad (or other
higher-end practice pads)?

Thanks.

Jerry,

I'm not familiar with the practice pads, but the DTXtreme pads have a
far more realistic and gentle feel than the usual gum rubber, whether
Yamaha's, Roland's, or Pintech's. As a long-time mesh user, I was
taken completely by surprise when I first tried them, reporting on
this board that they give meshes a run for their money so far as touch
is concerned. Meshes aren't created equal either. Though I still rate
the old Hart two-ply woven heads (whch are still on my pads) as hard
to beat (unfortunate pun; in that sense, really easy to beat), I may
well prefer the higher-end Yamaha TPs to Roland or Pintech mesh heads,
which can be too bouncy.

Yes, I meant the gum rubber pads, like reel feel pads. Those pads are almost too hard. I would hope the TP100 would be a little softer.

Hey Ed,

Would you consider the 100 worth the money for an
uprade from my TP65s om my DTXpress III. I'm guessing
the knob won't work on the III, is that the case?

Thanks,
John

John,

It always hard to justify spending someone else's money, but I'd say
that anyone looking to improve response and feel over the TP65 with a
rubber pad couldn't do any better than the DTXtreme options. I can't
imagine anyone thinking that the difference was subtle, that's for
sure. The red knob won't work on the III, but the pad itself is still
a winner. By the way, OGD (OldGuyDrummer) has owned every Yamaha kit
ever produced (except the DTXpressI). He'd be a good source of opinion
about this issue. Hopefully, he'll jump in. If so, hi OGD. Let's catch
up.

I can't tell you how a mesh head feels since I don't own one, but a
TP100 is a great pad. It feels almost like a real tom. If you want to
invest, do it on a TP100/TP120
