Volume problem when Connecting my DTXpress to a PA

Volume problem when Connecting my DTXpress to a PA

2005-10-26 by daddykingcool

Hi all

I hope someone can help me with this annoying problem.

I'm having trouble getting a decent gigging volume when connecting
my DTExpress to a PA system.

I have tried 2 different PA's. The 2nd is a brand new Mackie 400
watt active speakers system.

Basically if I try to turn up the PA input for a decent gigging
volume the PA peaks (goes into the red). The drums have to be
turned up much higer than anything else plugged into the PA just to
get anywhere near the right / comparative volume.

I have experimented with the volume on the DTXpress Brain (makes no
difference) and switched the live sound option on (also makes no
difference).

I have also tried comming out of the left input and right input on
the brain (and both) - still makes no difference.

Are there any other settings on the Brain that I could try - does
any one else have this problem, does the DTExpress have a low output
volume.

Any help on this will ne appreciated - I don't want to do a factory
reset as it took me hours to get all the right sounds and custom
kits etc sorted out + stopping the mis triggering whci I now have
just right.

Many thanks.......

[DTXpress] DTXpress Hi-hat Pedal/Controller Questions

2005-10-30 by Rob C

I have an original DTXpress kit and have been using it with a Roland TD-3 module. The Yamaha hi-hat pedal doesn\u2019t do anything when connected to the TD-3. Should the hi-hat pedal work with other modules or are they brand/model exclusive?

Also, with a Yamaha module, should the hi-hat pedal from the original DTXpress give you different settings depending on its position? (Open, Closed, Half Open, Foot Splashes) or is that only with newer Yamaha pedals? (HH 65, etc)

From an earlier post: "The Pintech hi hat controller is a Roland-type
that doesn't match Yamaha's polarity. It will work with a simple
adaptor. Drumbalaya carries it."

So it seems that they are not compatible, but there is a fix.

Re: Volume problem when Connecting my DTXpress to a PA

being a drummer, and owner of the dtxpress III, plus a sound person -
I can offer some suggestions....but first, you didnt exactly state how
you are connecting to the PA.

Assuming you are using just normal 1/4 guitar/speaker cords (hi-z)
between the dtxpress and the pa, does the board have a setting to set
between input levels?? Some have a 0db and others have a negative
setting (cant remember off the top of my head of its -10 or -12db)

Either way, the board should have some sort of input level meter. So
first try to set all eq on the channels you have to 0, then adjust the
output level of the dtxpress until you get an acceptable signal level
with the mixer channel volume slider at about -6 to -10db and the gain
set about half-way. If you are unable to get a decent level without
any clipping (red on the level meter or on the power amp) then you
should adjust the gain on the board slightly higher until you get a
decent level.

One thing that might help is to use a low-z to hi-z converter. Get
one that plugs into the dtxpress and then uses a normal microphone
cable to go to the board and plug into the low-z mic connection. Most
boards offer a little better connection this way and you also lose
less signal from the cable length.

Always use high quality cables and converters. If you skimp a few
bucks on the cable, you will regret it.

Let me know if this helps and if not tell me more about your
connection and the type of equipment being used. Im not real familiar
with the mackie powered stuff, but I run pa systems usually between
2,000 and 25,000 watts.

Hi and thanks for the advice.

We don't have another practice until next Friday but I will try out
your suggestions then.

It seems to me that the DTXpress must have a very low output volume
becuase on both PA's I have to put the drums nearly on full to get a
decent volume level - then I also get a lot of buzzing from the
speakers.

I have experimented with different leads and inputs. I was
wondering if there was any more tweaking on the Brain that would
help.

I will feedback as after our next practice.

Again many thanks for your reply.
