Drum Sticks

Drum Sticks

2006-03-01 by pcbye111

Greetings:

I know this is a lame question, but I am in the process of selecting
some drum sticks. I am a keyboard player in general but acquired a
DTxpressIII SP and have little experience on drums, let a lone E-
Drums.

Any of you folks have suggestions / guidence on stick selection. Way
too many brands, sizes, tips, etc.

I bought some cheap ones with plastic tips. They lasted a little
while. Now I want something more in line with what others generally
use.

My personal music style would be more 80's Synth Pop, but some of the
folks I practice with are moderately aggressive rockers. I also need
sticks for my DD55's that I use as MIDI controllers for synths and
for percussion effects.

Any and all suggestions welcome.

Best regards;

Peter B.

Peter,

I like the Zildjian anti-vibration sticks for the DTXpress - 5A wooden
tips.

Hi Peter,
Describing your music style helps a lot when deciding what
stix to use. Sounds like you would best off with a 7A stick size,
you could probably get away with a 5A as well, though that's
starting to get a bit on the heavy side of things.

Some folks may disagree, but I don't think it matters what type of
tip you use on e drums, however, I swear by nylon tips for all
rock/pop drumming applications.

When I was 16, (a very long time ago!) I was playing
hard rock / punk and used 5B's but as I've settled down and my style
has matured, I find lighter stix are much easier to use and am able
to still hit heavy without snapping them prematurely.

I'm a bit concerned to hear that your stix
only "lasted a little while", as you shouldn't be hitting e drums
that hard that you start breaking them!

Anyway, at the end of the day it comes down to personal choice.
I can only recommend light stix in your case.

I use: Pro Mark and Vic Firth 7A's, 5A's and American Jazz -
all are nylon tips.
These stix are made of Hickory and if looked after, will
last you a long time..........especially on e drums.

Let me know how you went,
                          Chris.B

I agree with Keith

Zildjian anti vibe sticks really work well with rubber pads & DTXpress
cymbals, taking some of the shock away from your wrists/hands (can be
a problem with heavy hitters)- they come in most popular sizes but are
more expensive than standard sticks (about one & a half times average
stick price). I wouldn't bother with nylon tips, they make no
difference on an electronic kit.

i third the motion. it maybe a little bit expensive compared to other sticks but its well worth it.

I had a problem with hitting a little too hard, and getting a vibration off the sticks which really bothered me. I noticed someone uses the Zildan AntiVibe stick, and I may try them. I went an bought the Vic Firth E-Sticks. They seem a little lighter than a 5B, and are a little longer. the bead is also more round than a 5B. I like them alot, and will pick up a couple more pairs.

Hi Peter

I bought some Ahead 5A anti-vibe sticks and used them but then one
broke .. not just slightly, the inner aluminium core fractured
completely. I complained to my supplier who provided me with another,
but at \ufffd25 or so I felt I wasn't going to go further along that line.

Also I wasn't happy with other things about the Aheads. There's a
groove at the point where you want to hold the stick .. it's probably
deliberately there, but I found it had a sharp, irritating edge.

I also couldn't quite get used to the fact that they are slippery,
whereas varnished wood isn't. So I ended up buying the grip tape they
recommend which then went too far the other way and started giving me
blisters. After not too long, of course, the tape starts slipping and
comes off, and that's not cheap to replace either.

Simultaneously I took drum lessons and learned how to hold my sticks
correctly. I still don't, actually, but I hold them better than I did
and my problem's disappeared.

So I used medium weight wooden sticks with nylon tips but the tips
kept ptanging across the room.

Nowadays I use cheap 7As (by Performance Percussion) with wooden tips
from the local music shop. I'm totally happy with those. They last
forever, and maybe the lightness means there's less energy in the
vibration so it's less harmful.

Heavier sticks seem to matter when playing an acoustic kit, but don't
when playing a digital one, so that works for me.

Another suggestion - carbosticks. I like them but bought them with a
small round tip which doesn't seem so good with the edrums. Buy them
with the normal elongated tip.

Folks:

Thanks a million for all the advice on sticks. I think I am going to
try a couple of pairs of the Zildjian Wood Tipped Anti Vibration Hickory
units unless I hear otherwise.

Now my only questions is what tip. 5A or 5B or a pair of both? They
also make a "Super Wood" Anti Vibration that says they are "Slightly
Larger and Longer than the Standard 5A and 5B respectively".

Any comments / suggestions?

Any of the above are $8.99 USD from Musicians Friend. I am ordering a
bunch of other stuff so No Tax / Shipping which makes them an OK deal I
guess.
