Kick drum triggering

Kick drum triggering

2006-10-26 by john@johnallsopp.co.uk

Hi ppl

It's been a while since I contributed to this group. Well over a year
ago, Keith, you'll remember looking at my KP65 and working out that on
trigger it first gave a negative peak, and we concluded that the piezo
was wired up wrongly.

I bought another KP65, but the other one seemed OK and I never put it
on. Well now, pre-gig, I thought I'd try the new one, and that's
exactly the same.

So, probably, it wasn't the KP65 after all.

So my problem is still that I can sit and kick away as consistently as
I like, and sometimes it just misses a trigger.

What bass drum beater do people use? I managed to break mine and
bought a felt one, but I think I should be using something like a
leather ball, I guess the equivalent is one of those with plastic one
side and felt the other. Has anyone noticed any improvements or
preferences?

And settings? I played for the first time with the setting for
rejecting double hits, I think it's set to 3 (maybe). Setting it to 2
or 4 seemed to cause other problems so I put it back how it was. Is
there anything else I should be looking at?

All help appreciated.

Cheers
J

i have a dt2e kit with the original kik...i trun the knob all the way to the + side...it still skips.
its even worse when i use a double bass pedal. it really skips.
so...when i play live...i just mike the bass drum.

I had an aha! moment when I thought .. this is all about the position
of the striker on the pad. Now I try to get it as central as possible.
Is that a good strategy? It still skips, but it's worse if off centre
.. I think.

Re: [DTXpress] Kick drum triggering

tried that too....using a single beater or double beater. i moved the it around.
this is how it usually skips....on a double pedal....the 1st kik is solidbut the 2nd kik cancels.
On a single pedal....2 fast kiks...the first is solid...2nd one blanks out.

Mine isn't to do with the speed of the second hit, I can just be
plugging away at beats 1 and 3, and it'll inexplicably miss one.

If your second one is really soon after, that sounds like the self
rejection setting I was just playing with .. but I'm sure you know
that.

Re: [DTXpress] Kick drum triggering

2006-10-27 by MarkMcder9@aol.com

Have faith!

My DTXPress II had this same problem. With a little patience and a
twiddling of various parameters (refer to the user manual), the problem was cured.

Interestingly - I was talking to a guy in a shop the other day who was
bringing his DTXPress II unit in for repair, suffering the same problem. He said
that a dry-soldered joint had come loose. A dob of solder and hey presto!

Worth a look?

No no no, you don't get away that easily. What parameters?

Maybe I'll open up the old one, but I swapped units and suffer the
same problem. But as you say, it's worth a look :-)

Ooh, do you think it's to do with hitting really hard? I haven't
noticed that, I'll have a play.

Is there anyone out there NOT getting this who would be willing to
share their settings? Even just tell us what type of beater you're
using.

Re: [DTXpress] Kick drum triggering

2006-10-28 by MarkMcder9@aol.com

I use a Pearl beater - flat - one side felt, the other plastic. I always
use the felt side.

I have no problems now with mine.

Simply adjust your parameters.

I will post mine - when I get round to looking at them!

Cheers!

Re: Kick drum triggering

J,

I've been away so sorry for the late reply. My settings are, self
rejection 5, rejection 2, specific rejection 0. I have a DW pedal and
use the rubber beater. I tend to fix it slightly off centre, but I
move it around slightly each time I dis-assemble it.

One question - does it only miss hits when the loudspeaker volume is high?

Also, as you are a heavy hitter, have you tried a drum path stuck to
the KP65?

Keith.

Hi Keith.

I think we've had this conversation before .. what's a drum path?

A typing mistake! A drum patch. They are discs of plastic, stuck
onto normal kick drums to protect them (while probably changing the
drum sound a little as well).

It may stiffen up the KP65 and potect it a little from the hits. Are
your hits usually 99% when in the trigger menu?

Keith.
