Yamaha or Roland?

Yamaha or Roland?

2008-01-01 by Jennifer

Hello,
I am new here and just looking for some thoughts. I joined this group
because my intention was to buy a Yamaha set...Xplorer or Xpress. I
went to a large music store and they had only the Xplorer set up and 5
different Roland sets. Needless to say I came home with the TD6SW. Did
I make a mistake?? I played an acoustic set about 12 years ago and have
not touched drums since. This will be my first experience with
electronic drums. I will not be playing on stage, just at home with my
family. I like to play mostly rock and metal.

Thanks,
Jen

I can't see how you have made a mistake. There are differences between the Yamaha & Roland but you should be happy playing either. Play it and enjoy it.

Keith.

What did you pay for it (if I may ask) The Yamaha sets are a good bang for your buck, long lasting setup and have good sound and are pretty expandable using the midi interface so if you aren't going pro then you will be happy with them. I just bought a DTXpress II for $450 (lightly used by a female drummer) with a Iron Cobra pedal and a Pork Pie throne included in great condition and I love it! I've already programmed some new samples into it and the only problem I'm having (although not a real problem) is that I want MORE PADS AND CYMBALS! LOL! But as it is expandable I will have them soon enough. You have to love the sounds you can get from electronic drums and the versatility of the sets. Have fun with your new set and play on!

I'll preface by saying that I am a noob to edrumming...BUT I LOVE IT.
AND THIS GROUP IS AMAZINGLY KNOWLEDGEABLE AND WILLING TO HELP.

I agree with the other posts. You didn't make any mistake at all. I
have an original DTXpress...and was lacking some of the pads. I have
been replacing them with Roland mesh pads little-by-little. They are
a little quieter (for others around you) and they are a lot easier to
find replacement parts for. It seems that Yamaha has a better price
point, but just don't want to get into the mesh-head business.

All that said, I really love the flexibility of the module itself. I
have not had any problems with it, and I have also used it to connect
to my PC and run midi into Sonar (for recording).

In the end, I think it is really a $ issue. I am sure you will have
years of fun with your new kit. Have a blast.

I think it is Roland's patents that stop Yamaha making mesh heads!

Can't be... what about pintech? Don't they make mesh heads/drums

Or whatever company it is....Roland's certainly not the only one.
I'm considering a TD12/20 kit to replace my DTXTreme IIs... if the Xtreme III isn't that awesome.

The Pintech ones are made under license from Roland.

Roland's patent is not on mesh heads as such, but something to do with
the positioning/arrangement of the piezo and foam which couples from
the mesh to the piezo - I forget exactly what. While it doesn't stop
anyone making a mesh head, it stops them making one that works in the
same way as the Roland. Even the Pintech ones seem to use a foam
cylinder rather than the cone used on the Rolands.

Keith.
