New year resolutions

New year resolutions

2008-01-02 by John Allsopp

Hi

OK, here's a question for you.

I've become a bit bored with the old routines. Drumming along with Snow
Patrol's no challenge any more.

I joined a new band and their previous drummer was pretty good so I'm
having to raise my game. He was a jazz drummer (but I'm not looking for
that) but listening to him has taught me a lot.

There are new tunes to write from February onwards and I need to step up
and make new rhythms for new songs. So I'm looking for new things to try
to widen my experience.

Personally, I'm working through some CDs of Cuban music, reggae, some
proper percussionists work like for Bjork and P J Harvey, Tom Waits, and
the BBC Asian Network, Bobby Friction .. that's what's really got me
excited.

So help me out. If you were in my position, what would you do? Is there
a technique that really took you big steps forward? Some way of
practicing that works for you? A book maybe? A percussionist you admire?

What gets you excited? That's the question.

Oh, and, if you know anything about how to write a good rhythm for a new
tune, spill your secrets here and how.

Cool, I ended up buying a DVD drum tutorial off Amazon as a result.

John,

Out of interest, what DVD have you bought? I have been looking at
buying something such as the Jojo Mayer one.

Keith.

This one:

Jeff Porcaro - Instructional For Drums [1989] [DVD] (2004) Jeff Porcaro

Groove drummer, apparently. I bought it just on the word "groove". Oh
and YouTube had some excerpts from the DVD and it all seemed reasonable,
if a little American Easy Listening, but hey* :-)

* I thought punk was supposed to rid us of bands like Toto, now I find
I'm buying their instructional DVDs :-)

Jeff Porcaro's dad is a great drummer and great teacher. Jeff was
probably the preeminent session drummer of his day--following on the
heels of studio icons like Hal Blaine and Jim Gordon--and for good
reason. He was Steve Gadd-like in his technique and in his ability to
nail a part. Look him up on the All Music Guide to see the range of
sessions that he played. You might well end up thinking that Toto, a
band full of his relatives, comprised a small part of his
accomplishments. If it were remotely possible to describe his talent in
words, I might have given it a try. Give a listen.

Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire, UK. Allsopp, 2 lls 2 pps is an unusual
spelling.

Cool, I've no idea about that world so thanks. If I find inspiration,
I'll be happy.

Cheers
