pcy135 vs. orginal dtxpress

2014-06-03 by drummerone13@...

Hi, I have come to you before for problems and you all have always come through, I have the original dtxpress. my dual zone cymbal is beyond repair. I bought a pcy135 I know it will only produce 2 zone. The problem I am having is getting it to do 2 zone capibilities. I have done factory reset, and I am trying to get fast crash on the edge and china on the bow. I am getting 2 different sounds on the edge and it is hard to explain. since I have an extra cymbal added than what came with the dtxpress I have used the 9/10 input to free up space. I just need to know what inputs to use with the extra cymbal and as far as the pcy135 is there anything I need to do with trigger selection in whatever input you suggest. I have looked all over the net but all info.is for dtxpress 3 or 4 I am lost and after factory reset all my custom kits are gone. Please any help that anyone can give I will be so greatfull. And thank you in advance for taking the time to help me out. John

All inputs 1-8 on the original DTXpress are dual zone so the PCY135 should work. The PCY135 manual recommends setting the GAIN in the TRIGGER menu so that it registers 90-95% when hit hard (for the DTX series). You also have the adjustment pot on the cymbal itself so it is worthwhile adjusting that as well (there are no recommendations in the manual as to what to set it to!).

On the module, make sure the PAD TYPE is set to one of the dual zone cymbals such as PCY Crash, PCY Ride. If you are still having problems, try the "misc" pad types such as "misc 2" "misc 4" or "misc 6".

Hello,

I am trying to use 2 mono pads on either channel 2 or 3 on original DTXpress. I have tried splitters (similar to what I already use for channel 9/10) but cant get it to work. Only the pad connected to the tip of the jack will trigger. If there are dual zone inputs why cant I get the ring trigger to work? Do I need a special/custom trigger?

The inputs 1 to 8 are so called "stereo" inputs which doesn't help understand what they really are. The need a single piezo and a "rim switch", not two piezos. Inputs 9/10 are different - they are design for a piezo on each input. To use two mono pads on input 1-8 you need a bit of circuitry to fake the signals. See DKDI-23 Drum Piezo Expander - Home

Thanks Keith, Can I order this from you? What is the price? Do I need an expander for each input? Or does one expander cover all inputs? I’m interested in making one input a 3 zone…is that possible?

Cheers

Hi. I don't know if I understand well the problem, but here is my input: (I own a DTXpress IV)

According to the manual (and my personal experience), inputs 2, 3, 4 and 8 are stereo, and you can use a Y-shaped cable to connect two different mono pads.

I'm currently using Hosa YPP117, but I think Hosa STP203 will do the job too.

That must be a difference between the original DTXpress and the IV….i have tried that and it does not work…I think Keith has me set up though…I need conversion circuitry…thanks for checking in

Yes the DTXpress IV is quite different. the DTXpress I/II/III are similar and accept piezo/switch pads in most inputs i.e. dual zone. The DTXpress IV has dual mono pad TOM inputs so they accept two mono pads through a simple Y splitter but won't work with a dual zone piezo/switch tom.

Thank you Keith, you are always a big help and I thank you for always a quick reply and solution to the problems I encounter. I am going to look at my settings again and hope there was something I missed or did not know to check out. Also thanks to all who took the time to reply to this pcy135 problem. Thank you all for your time. Sincerely, John
