Question about EQ

Question about EQ

2002-01-01 by saadrummer

Hey everyone! first wow, this is awesome site, everyone seems soo
knowledgeable etc, you guys rock! I just bought at DTXpress about a
month ago and I love it. I have been playing on a Ayotte drumsmith
kit for the last 3 years or so, and I can honestly say that the
dtxpress amazes me. plus it sounds really good through a SWR full
stack ( 1 18" and 4 10"'s ) :) thanks to my bass player!
Anyways I have a question, is there anyway to set the EQ on each
individual pad? I know you can set the the EQ for the whole kit
through the various options. here's the problem I'm running into, I
just made an awesome snare tone, but in order to do that I had to
crank up the treble EQ to about 6. the problem is now my ride cymbal
and high hats ( it sounds like it's clipping ), ,but if I turn the
the treble down lower it stops the clipping but makes my snare drum
sound worse. hopefully that made sense, and if anyone has any ideas
I would much appreciate it.

Thanks in advance, and by the awesome job on the site! Raj :)

There's no direct way to alter the EQ (Bass/Treble)
for each pad. It's a kit-wide adjustment. However, you
*can* alter the Cutoff Frequency for individual pads.
This might get the effect you're looking for. You'll
find it in the Edit menu under
KIT IN=pad x V=1
Decay=0 Fc=0

With Fc set to +64, you'll get the brightest sound for
that voice. Adjusting the Fc setting to a negative
value (min -64) will get you a duller sound. It's not
a true EQ but it's the nearest thing to it.

Check the Reference manual on page 18, section 1-5

Hope this helps

Thanks Giles, I will definitely give that a try. Hey also, I had one
more question, I have been looking at your web page and you said to
always layer voices. Please excuse me if this is a dumb question but
what do you layer them with? Like what is a good effect for a snare
drum, or a tom or whatever? If you could give me some suggestions it
would help. And also, to layer a voice, you just go under voice,
then were it says such as "pad 2" v=1 you just change it to "pad 2"
v=2 right? Sorry if that is a dumb question or already has been
asked, I am very new to DTXpress.. lol but thanks for you all your
help and patience, Raj :)

Yes, you can have 2 voices per pad using v=1 and v=2.
You don't always have to do this, but it can give you
a thicker sound for each drum if you use 2 voices
instead of one. It makes editing a lot easier if you
just stick to one sound, though!

I can't give you any hard & fast rules - you'll have
to experiment for yourself, which is half the fun.

You can tune V1 a tone lower (i.e. toms) than V2 (and modify decay also) to get a more realistic sound (whem you come with a roll from piannissimo to forte). As it was said before, you can edit V1 with a ride cymbal sound and V2 with the bell of the sound, V1 with a snare sound and V2 with the rimshot (I don`t like using the dual zone to trigger rimshot. I trigger sometimes when i don\ufffdt want it). You oughta try to edit V1 with some effect (to do ghost notes) and V2 with a snare sound. I like also V1 with hi-hat closed and V2 with bassdrum sound (for the hihat pedal, so you have double bass drumming and the chick of the hihat). I supposse you know you can crossfade them, isn\ufffdt it? (you can trigger the two sounds at the same time or get V1 at low velocity and V2 and high velocity). I hope this give you some ideas.
