Drums too loose

Drums too loose

2002-09-04 by Patricio Murphy

Hello,
I've noticed that my drummer has to keep fastening (?) the kit constantly since it gets loose after some minutes of playing. Any strategies to avoid the parts to move while playing?
Thanks!

I hear that one! I was on tour last week and the whole thing fell apart! The clamps? become stripped easily, and I am running out of them and don't know where I can get new ones for cheap. As it is, I need to get a new stand, that one is WAY too flimsy to tour with. Anyone have any clamp/fastener and drum stand suggestions?

You can get generic rack clamps (all racks and clamps
are standard size except pearl's)for about 10 bucks at
most drum shops and they're metal, not those flimsy
plastic ones that come with the kit. I replaced the
clamps I take apart fo pack up and that was all. I
gig with the kit once a month and I haven't had any
problems in the past year yet. I'm very adamant about
tearing down as little as possible to prevent
stripping. The sturdiest alternative I think would be
to buy a generic rack from explorers percussion, that
can get pricey though (I've sometimes taken e-drums
with me and used them on my acoustic set, they're much
better on a metal rack). Those clamps are on the big
complaint list that everyone seems to have for the
dtxpress along with an inconsistent kick drum and an
extreme lack of neccessary headphone volume. I wish I
had a better or cheaper solution but this is the only
thing I've found so far. Luckily for me it's worked
up to this point. -Joe

Hi Patricio,

Let me describe a few things that can be done, depending on how much
you can get in Argentina, and on how much your drummer wants to spend.

First, if the screws and nuts on the clamps are coming loose, you may
be able to get something we call lock washers for them. This is a
different kind of washer that resists a screw or nut from turning,
once it has been tightened. Also, if you have screws and nuts that
come loose, which you want to always leave tight, there is a kind of
glue made by Locktite in the US which will keep screws and nuts tight.

Another item that may help is memory locks. These help where the
clamp attaches to the rack. The memory lock has a small key that fits
into a notch in the side of the clamp. This gives you 2 sets of
screws holding the clamp steady.

Of course, you also have the option of changing clamps as well. I use
Gibraltar clamps on my kit now. They are more expensive, they are
made of metal instead of plastic - and they stay where you put them!
I will give you a warning about them - they may scratch aluminum rack
tubes more than the plastic clamps will. But then your drummer can
upgrade his rack tubes to steel ones....

Hi Sam P,

I'll use this note to suggest that anyone doing serious touring with a
kit resting on aluminum tubes and plastic clamps is likely to be very
frustrated. Although they are light weight and easy to carry, they
will not tolerate touring, in my humble opinion.

Steel tubes and metal clamps are what is required for that type of
use. Now before you panic, if cash flow is a problem - then buy
things as you can afford them - piece by piece if necessary. Or, if
you can afford a few hunderd dollars at one shot, you can get into a
set up that will stand up to touring, and will be strong enough for
you to stand on at the end of the show to take your bows!

Did someone say Gibraltar? I sound like a spokesperson. If anybody
from Kaman is listening, I want a commission!!!
