16th notes on hi-hat

16th notes on hi-hat

2002-11-15 by Harri Ohra-aho

Hi

When playing hi-hat 16th notes on the tp60 pad, I can't hold a steady
rhythm since my sticks usually start bouncing all over the place
after a while. Anyone have any tips to how to play these? Any insight
on how to best place the pad... angle, position etc?

I haven't really played this stuff on a acoustic kit, so my general
technique might be crap, but I was just wondering if there's
something more I have to take into consideration when playing with a
rubber pad instead of a hi-hat cymbal.

Thanks,
Harri

Hi Harri,
It sounds like your playing with too much force.
Lighten up!
Get a practice pad and practice
sixteenths(RLRL,ETC.)while tapping quarter notes with
your right foot. Another cool thing you can do is
paradiddles(RLRR,LRLL) while tapping quarter notes
with your right foot. Once you have mastered this, try
tapping eighth notes with your right foot, and once
you've mastered this add your left foot, playing the
"e"s and "a"s. This will help "steady" you rhythm!
Practice this stuff and when you have mastered these
exercises, write back! I've got a few more that will
help! :)Brian

Hi Harri,

Another thing that may cause your hits to be hard
could the size sticks you're using - are you using
heavy or light sticks? Lighter ones will not bounce
as much as heavier ones would, but I agree with
Briaan, practice is a necessary ingredient...
