New User with Questions

Hello everyone! I just bought a floor demo DTXpress from a Guitar
Center in Austin TX a few days ago. It didn't come with a manual.
Fortunately I have been using midi for a long time and was able to
figure most of it out with trial and error. This is my first kit and
i have to learn everything, even how to hold sticks! I was relieved
to find this group as the archive shows that some of my problems with
the unit (touchy hihats, bizarre program changes when connected to a
sequencer and that it sounds better with fat sticks are not problems
peculiar to my unit.

It sounds great when played without my sequencer. However, connected
to Logic Platinum I am getting "trigger noise" with each hit. A
little buzz. It doesn't appear to be a midi loop as I have local off
set, like a keyboard would. Any ideas?

2nd question--can i use the "dual" pads with the DTXPU brain? Like
getting a Roland V drum just for the snare?

3rd question--Given that the answer to #2 is yes, has anyone tried
rigging up a stereo "Y" adapter to the trigger inputs and thereby
running two "mono" pads off the same trigger input? Does that work?
I am so used to having more sounds immediately available i already
want more pads, and it seem like I could add quite a few more if this
worked without getting another brain.

Many thanks! I will be uploading some kits soon. Though i am new to
e-drums, I am used to MIDI--go check out my site at:

The answer is Yes, but only for dual input 9/10. All the other inputs are stereo, but the rim trigger system relies on an inverter circuit (in the brain) triggered from a condensor circuit rim trigger. I was working on home made condensor triggers, but apathy has set in. Maybe one day I'll get back onto it, but right now my kit isn't even in my own house, so I don't get to see it much, long story.

As for using stereo pads of other manufacturers, well we've been over this ground, and the only hing to do is check with the manufacturer first, they will be able to tell you.

Regards
	Andy

Thanks for the info, Andy. Much appreciated! The Guitar center finally got
me the manual, but Yamaha wasn't as specific as you are.

Having a MIDI problem. Its happened twice where connected to a sequencer
the brain stops making noise on channel 10 in local off mode. All the
channels send and receive except channel 10. I toggled all the global midi
switches but can't get ch 10 back till I re initialize the machine (after
saving sysex, which seems to work really well). I'm stumped. Anyone know if
this is a known bug? Anyone having trouble with midi sequencers with this
unit? Sometimes I am hearing delays of almost a 16th note playing over midi
at random intervals and i have a fast interface (8portse). Wondering if I
am expecting too much to get tight live drums tracks in Logic with the
dtxpress.

I suspect there's an gremlin OS in the box. I still have a few weeks where
I can take it back. I'd love to hear others experiences. There is a lot
to like in the DTxpress, but if it can't record over midi i have to
reconsider.

Best,

Rich

Re: New User with Questions

2000-02-27 by Ken Anthony

Rich,
I've been recording midi off the dtxpress for about 2 months now.

You may be sending a 'midi volume 0' to channel 10 to the dtxpress,
which sticks
until you reset or send 'midi volume x' to channel 10. I saw a similar
affect using NTRACK studio.

I'm recording like this:
dtxpress -> sound card --> seq software / thru on --> sound card -->
dtxpress

local mode: off

I'm having a big problem with NTRACK studio because of the way
it records midi, but haven't had any problems with other software.
( quartz audio, etc. ). What happens is I'll record about 5 minutes
of midi via dtxpress, hit the stop button, and have to wait almost
a minute while NTRACK processes it's buffers. No other midi seq does
this.
It drops a lot of notes, and thru mode suffers delays or drop outs.

Also, I've noticed that while playing dtxpress overdubs after I've
recorded
analog tracks causes a heavy latency ( you describe as 16th note delays
).

It appears many of these packages concentrate
so heavily on getting the audio portions to play in sync that midi
is a secondary concern.

I know my timing is not the best, but when i play back the midi
recordings
i cringe :)

For best results i have to record all the midi first, then lay down
analog.

fyi: there's something wrong in the world when 5 years ago i could
record
real time to a DOS midi seqencer ( voyetra ) , and Windows just can't
keep up
with a simple low speed serial midi stream.

What software are you using?

RE: New User with Questions

I am using DTXpress midi successfully with Cubase VST - no delays, no playback problems. There were a couple of setting needed changing initially from default to get snare and kick notes working. A friend Andy T also is using a DTXpress extensively with Cubase and reports no problems.

Ken,
Try filtering out sysex from the DTXpress - its got active sensing (don't understand fully) but it seems to constantly output midi information if the UT sync mode is set to internal or auto.

Re: New User with Questions

2000-02-28 by Rich

Thanks Paul,
I'm going to try to make it work. I have logic audio platinum, and cubase.
Recording midi is a no brainer for these programs. And the DTXpress doesnt
throw out much data, less than a keyboard, actually.

If there are certain tweaks people have made to optimize midi recording
please do tell!

playback problems. There were a couple of setting needed changing initially
from default to get snare and kick notes working. A friend Andy T also is
using a DTXpress extensively with Cubase and reports no problems.

Re: New User with Questions

I've used Cakewalk Pro Audio since version 2. I'm now
up to ver. 9 and it's the best yet. Super-stable on my
PC and "next to nothing" latency.
I've been using an Intel P200MMX with 96Mb RAM for the
last 2 years and have found no problems. Recently
upgraded to AMD K6-2 500 and still solid as a rock.

Some points to note:

I have found no discernable differences in DirectX
performance between AMD and Intel.

Active Sensing -a method used by one MIDI device to
see if another MIDI device has dropped the connection.
A bit like continually PINGing a network connection to
keep it alive. Active sensing can be filtered out by
Cubase/Cake/Logic etc. but should have no audible
effect on a MIDI stream.

Any audible artifacts such as glitches on Ch.10 might
be visible in a MIDI analyser. Mute all other channels
and then use the analyser to see what's coming in. If
there's nothing there, then you're looking at either a
sequencer problem or a soundcard glitch. If the
DTXpress was at fault, I guess we'd all be complaining
about it by now....
