Looking for beginner band advice

Looking for beginner band advice

2003-03-05 by animatoranimator

I have a few questions concerning taking a relatively "beginner band" out of the basement and in front of an audience. The band pop-rock, all originals looking to start playing out. I'm really curious to hear the perspectives for this board. Thanks.

1. How long is a typical set? Both in number of songs and length of time
2. How many sets are played in a typical "night at a bar"?
3. How long are your breaks between sets?
4. How many breaks during a gig?
5. Typically is a band responsible for their own PA?
6. What is a "going rate" for live bands now days?
7. What is your best piece of advice for a beginning band?

I understand these questions are very general and answers will every, but that's what I'm looking for.
Thanks again!

if you play small venues, you are responsible for your
own sound control.

Depends on the area you live, the size of the club and
THE SIZE OF YOUR BAND...do you have roadies, a sound
and light man, are you renting equipment or a van to
haul equipment, do you have your own agent expenses
and advertising expenses...all this must be taken into
consideration...plus expect bar owners to want
"something for nothing", most of them tend to be
cheap. I would suggest if you play a club for the
first time, accept what they offer, if it is
reasonable, and if you draw a good crowd, then up your
price, or try a guaranteed base amount plus some of
the door proceeds.

drinkin' and druggin' alone!! Keep your
girlfriend/boyfriend, or marital problems OFF the
stage-you will have enough problems dealing with
different band-member's personalities and egos, have
patience-you won't be an overnight star. If you go
into it with the idea of just having fun, it can and
will be a great time.
