Hi Bob,
Well, we can't have you going crazy, even if we may have to work on
this one for a while. I don't recall having that problem when I had
the kit, but maybe you're onto something. Let's try to clarify the
background first. It's the rare piezo pad that doesn't have
something of a sweet spot that you have to control, or learn to hit.
I assume that the phenomenon occurs with whatever snare voice you
choose. What is your gain setting for the snare? When the change in
tonality occurs, do you also lose volume? How are hard a hit are you
talking about?
An easy answer is that with electronic drums, there is a law of
diminishing returns for power. Just watch the gain meter in the
trigger menu, and you'll see that once gain is set at a comfortable
level, you can reach a force of 99 well before your elbow starts to
quiver and your fingers bleed. The other part of the easy answer is
that the harder you hit an 8" pad, the less likely you are to hit it
exactly where you wanted. Many people have that experience with the
cymbals: Trying to hit them hard doesn't really pay off in sound,
and it increases the chances that you will hit one of those spots
that either doesn't make any noise, or in the case of a stereo
cymbal, doesn't make the noise that you intended.
Here's a guess: Since the DTXII's piezo is surrounded by FSRs on the
rim designed to fire the piezo with a different voice when they are
hit, a stray hit may activate the rim switch and give you a sound
that you didn't expect at all. You could also just be missing the
sweet spot and hitting the pad awkwardly. Obviously, this may not be
what's happening in your case, but if we can eliminate the obvious,
we'll be able to narrow it down further.

different like a hollow weak snare.
