cheap amp?

cheap amp?

2003-04-07 by k0beyu

ok, bearing in mind I've just wiped out my bank account getting a
dtxpressII, is there a relatively cheap way I can get some reasonable
amp on it? Just need it for jamming really. Tried running it through
the hifi, but just don't get the necessary volume...
any suggestions?

The problem with cheap is that its...ah, cheap, and cheap is
relative. What you don't want to sacrifice are enough high frequency
response to make the cymbals sound real, and different, and enough
low frequency response to do justice to the toms and kick. The DTX
sounds really good well amplified (which doesn't necessarily mean
deafness-inducing loud; the louder/softer an amp can play and still
sound good, the better it is). Run a search of the archives
under "amplifier" or "amplification" to get other members' ideas and
find your price range. A keyboard amp is often the way to go, if
you're not buying a dedicated system from Roland, JBL, Mackie, etc.
If what attracts you seems too expensive, take a look at ebay.

I'll second that. My first amp was a "cheap amp" and it's sitting
under my desk collecting dust right now. I don't know where you are,
but I found a reasonably priced 75w amp for $165. I found it on eBay
and the seller only lived 40 miles from me. SCORE!

Mine is a Peavey KB-100 keyboard amp. Keyboard amps seem to do the
best with drums because they cover the highs and lows well. I
wouldn't get anything less than 50-60w RMS and it must have a 15"
woofer and some kind of horn (like a piezo) to sound well. The Fender
KX series gets good recommendations, the Peavey KB's, The Roland KC
series (although over priced). Stay away from the Behringer amps.
I've not heard much good about them. I've heard mixed reviews on the
Crate stuff (my "cheap amp" is a Crate).

I would spend a few weeks looking for a used bargain before I bought
new. Check eBay, the classifieds, even shops. Sometimes they'll deal
on the used stuff.

A good investment to go along with the amp is a Behringer MX602 mixer
for $60 new. There are some recent posts about them here.

Of course, you could check for a local Rock-n-Roll Rental company and try
out different power levels and brands b4 making a cash commitment. In
many cases the size of the amp you feel produces a reasonable sound will
be proportional to the size of the room and the volume of the other
musicians gear. If you're gunna play a 500 seat room with a guy with a
Fender 4X12 cabinet, you'll need a 75w RMS amp for headphones! :D

Another thing to remember is that sound volume is double when power is
SQUARED! So, in order to be twice as loud as a 10 watt amp, you need a
100 watt amp! Many people think "well, I have a 50 watt amp, so 100 watts
should be twice as loud". Not so. To double the volume of 100 watts?
Gotta go to 1000 watts (1 Kilo-watt!) So, you might want to give us a
better idea of what the target is. I know I bought my set with the idea
to perform with headphones and MIDI recording. I do have a Carvin 400
watt amp and a pair of Peavy 12" Mid size cabinets I can use if I want
people to actually hear me, but I don't envision the set ever leaving my
practice room. I don't get out much anymore... :(
