The neighbours complain about the noises above...

2003-04-10 by bpocred

Hi guys!
Last night I had my first official complaint about the noise I was
generating while playing my DTXPRESS. And to be honest I am not
surprised as I have been concered about the noise produced by the
kick tower while I play. Its not excessive as you know but seems to
be enough to annoy the girl below. She didn't complain verbally but
when I felt my bedroom floor shake as a result of her stereo I took
the hint and put my sticks away.

Basically I want to inquire if any of you have recommendations on how
to dampen the noise without affecting the performance of the kick
tower. At the moment I use a standard felt head beater on the bass
pedal. What are my alternatives? Would a rubber beater help? My
bedroom floor has a old stle wicker/ropey carpet and I have put a
carpet tile under the tower also.

Any help greatly appreciated,
Cheers,
Brian (london)

***Buy an old used mattress and place a 3/4" sheet of plywood on top of it.
Then assemble your DTXpress on top of it.

Problem solved.

Here's a solution that has made it's way around the list a few times:

http://www.dtxpressions.com/platform/platform.htm

If you build this, you should end up with a more stable platform than
some of the other ideas I've seen. Also, try playing with the very
lightest "jazz" sticks you can find, and also try turning up the gains on
your pads so you don't have to hit too hard. High-headphone volume can
help with this too since low headphone volume can lead to hitting harder.
Zildjan has recently created some drumsticks that are supposed to work
better for electronic drums but I haven't seen a review of them yet.

Also, it can't be emphasized enough that you will get more cooperation if
you work with your neighbors. Meet them, ask them when the best time to
play is or offer a mutually agreed upon "cut-off" time for drumming. If
they have a big surround-sound stereo you could be on the other end of
this argument at some point, so mind your manners and "drum unto
others..." :D
