Walking bass line

Walking bass line

2003-05-09 by quardlepleen

Hi guys,

I just got my DTXII and I'm wondering if there's a way to layer a
walking bass line over a bass drum sound. I don't want to trigger a
loop, but have the bass line advance one note every time I hit the
kick. The manual explains how to do it with a pad song, but I can't
seem to be able to layer the pad song with a kick sample.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I may not understand your question, or be right about the answer,
but I can't think of a way to do it with the dtx module alone. Once
you reserve a pad for a song, you don't get to use it as a drum
anymore. Plus, the dtx's stacking capability, unlike that of other
modules or trigger/MIDI devices, is limited; you can layer two notes
or sounds on an input but not play alternate sounds on successive
hits to create, say, a short bass figure. But even if you could, one
of your limbs would be taken up by playing the line, making you a
one-handed drummer, and you could only play one kick to a measure.
It seems to be one of those things that you'd need to do with an
external sequencer, either playing/ recording along with it or
recording the song to the dtx's sequencer for further use with or
without the kick accompaniment. Why does it have to be a pad song?
Does this help at all?

Ed

It doesn't have to be a pad song per se, I just figured that would be
the only way to do it. The idea is to have a bass figure that would
play one note every time you hit the kick, so it would sound like a
bass player playing in unison with your kick.

I could've sworn the original DTXpress had a drumkit that did that,
so I thought there'd be a way to do it with the DTXII.

Thanks for the info!

I've been trying to figure this out for two years and I finally
did !!

Here's how:

First of all you will need a midi keyboard to do this.
Second I wrote these instructions for the original DTXpress but I
assume you can do the same for DTX II.
Finally this is a rather advanced procedure. I warned you :-)

Phase 1:
You need to understand the concept of song pads in chase mode.
Go to any kit and press the voice button.
hit the kick drum to select that pad.
Page over until you see Func = Normal
Change that to Func = Pad Song
Page over until you see Song 1 = -- Play
Not all songs work well. Try to pick one that has drums from the
beginning.
Change Song to the song number you choose
change the -- to rp (repeat after reaching the end of the song)
Change the play to chse

OK now when you kick it will play one measure of the song then stop.
Wait.. Kick again and it will play the next measure then stop.
Got it?

So imagine that your "song" played only one bass note each measure.
Each time you hit the kick it would play the one bass note then stop.
No matter how fast or slow you kick it will play one measure(note).

Still with me?
Are you salivating yet?
Good !
So now you're saying "how do I create my own 'song' with one bass
note per measure?"

Phase 2
Hook up your midi keyboard out to DTX midi in.
Set the midi out on your keyboard to channel 7 (7,8,9 are the only
ones that will work. I'll use 7 for this example)

Turn off your DTX and start it again (just to make sure we are all
starting from the same place)
Go to the first user song. (should say EmptySng)
Press Shift-Start to enter record mode.
Set the REC M= to the number of measures you want. (if you have 4
bass notes, then set this to 4)
Set Q = quarter note (this will fix your timing as you record)
Now get ready with your keyboard. Doesn't matter what sound you have
selected, you can change it after you record.

Press Start on the DTX and you will hear a 2 measure count-in.
After the count-in, play your notes on the keyboard.
Remember only play one note per measure. Like press 2,3,4 press,2,3,4

DTX will stop recording automatically after the number of measures
you specified has elapsed.

Almost there !!
Now you have to record the kick drum itself onto the song.
Press Shift-Start again to enter record mode.
leave everything as is except change the TR to 2 (track 2)
Press start and wait for the count-in.
After the count-in. Play your bass drum just like you did the
keyboard.

Play the song just like any other song on the DTX.
If you don't like the sound, (it's using a piano instead of a bass)
then do this:
Press the Song button.
Page over until you see SONG CH 1=off
Change CH 1 to CH 7
Change off to on
Make sure V=meldy
Change PCNo to the sound you want. (1 for piano 33 for bass etc.
They are listed in your manual)

Whew ! Song is done.

Now just follow the steps in phase one. Make sure you choose your
new song.

Enjoy !!

Fantastic. This should be in DTXpressions. Vern, oh Vern. Can you
read me? We got a bunch of new entrants (walking bass, review
guidelines . . . ) for the library.

Cool! I look forward to giving that a try at the weekend!

(Vern, you may want to précis this in the DTXpressions hints section)

How about the Reviewer's Guidelines in message #6135? Where should it
go?
