DTXU or DMpro?

DTXU or DMpro?

2003-05-16 by peterpan

hey guys,

as some of u know i'm currently in the process of upgrading my setup.
i've pretty much decided on the hart dynamics studio master 6.4 for
the kit but am having alittle difficulty on choosing the 2nd brain

i already have a dtxpress I brain and am very happy with it and
wouldn't really mind linkin 2 through a mixer, but i've also read
alot about the Alesis DMpro and am not entirely sure what to make of
it. many reviews have been very positive but all of them are alittle
dated, and i'm thinkin perhaps the dmpro is kinda out of date. i
really would like to add a different module to my setup as i'd love a
wider variety of sounds and functions. however i've never used (or
even seen) a dmpro and have no idea how it compares to the dtxpress.

i was wondering if anybody in the group has ever used a dmpro before
(assuming that u all have dtxpress') how does it compare to the
dtxpress brain? do u still think that its a good buy or are the
samples old and out of date?

also if i decide against the dmpro, i'll probably go for a dtxpress
II module. how does it compare to the dtxpress I module? are there
any differences at all or is it essentially the same brain painted
red?

cheers guys
pete

Pete,

You seem to be winning me in the lottery. In my opinion, the Pro is
a worthy additional unit, but only a great price; otherwise it's
overkill. You get good samples, relatively easy set up, and 16 basic
inputs (no 9/10 types or stereo types). Its other limiting factor is
its mediocre reliability. Remember also that new modules from Yamaha
and possibly Roland should be out this summer. Here's an old module
comparison chart that still has value:

Peter:
I've never used the DMPro, but I did use a DM5 as a second module for
about 2 days. Although I did like the tom and bass sounds better than
the DTX, I found it limited in many other aspects; such as those ED
mentioned.
I wound up using an additional DTX for a second module.
Life is simpler that way.

I've been considering (never used one though) the DM Pro. I see that
the DM Pro is 20 bit & the DTXpress brain is only 16 bit.
The extra bit rate along with the added trigger inputs sound
intersting.

I've also considered getting the discontinued DTXtreme module as I
may get a great price somewhere? But I have no idea what the bit
rate of that is?

I also with to upgrade my original DTXpress kit & already have to
some extent. I've added a dual trigger for snare, dual trigger
cymbal pad & a bell trigger. I use the older original pads to fill
up the 9/10 trigger inputs. So that leaves me with one unused single
trigger round pad.

I've seen in recent posts that many of you guy's are linking the
brain modules. This would be cool even with the DTX brain as some of
the sounds are decent. It's just the cymbal & snare sounds that bug
me a little. Plus I'd like to be able to have several or separate
audio outputs for the snare, hats & kick etc. to go into my Cubase
DAW recordings.

Steve
