moderators, files, and sites

moderators, files, and sites

2003-05-16 by liberatusvirus

UHH reported a while ago that he couldn't add a file because we'd
almost reached our limit. I've tried to contact Chris Thackston, who
founded this group, and Rolf Baehr, who must have become the
moderator through Chris, to deal with the situation, but both of
their given addresses came up empty. They do not appear to be
involved anymore. Yahoo tells me that its privacy policy prevents it
from appointing a new moderator with the power to manage the files.
Our options are (1) to ask individuals to delete their own files
after a certain period of time, (2) to set up another site somewhere
to add more files as necessary, (3) to have someone start a new
group altogether, with new moderators, on Yahoo or elsewhere.

Vern Graner offered to host the group outside Yahoo some time ago. A
few of us exchanged views about it; a search of the archives
under "Yahoo" will probably locate the thread. There are pros and
cons; how strong they are should be a matter of consensus, or at
least as democratic as possible. To his everlasting credit, Vern is
already hosting the DTXpressions site formerly handled by Giles
Hearn. We could certainly keep going as currently constituted on
Yahoo; the only drawback is that files will accumulate unless we
periodically delete our own and recommend that others do so as well
to make more room. Thoughts?

Ed:
Are 'Files' and their storage the only thing in question, or
does 'Files' also include Messages, Photos, Links, Database, et al?

If Vern has the time and facilities to administer such a site, that
would be excellent (and most gracious on his part).

This site is fine, but the messaging is a bit cumbersome. Maybe it's
because I'm used to the type of forum found on the Drum Center of
Indianapolis' board; very nice and well organized. If no one has ever
visited, you should check it out. There's a wealth of great
information and very friendly participants (much like this board).
Their URL is www.drumcenterforum.com. It's drawback is that it
doesn't have picture/file upload capabilities.

Stephen,

Good point. I assume that Photos, Links, et al. are under the same
constraints as Files. If this group ultimately moves, I'd like to
see some stab made beforehand to make sure that the 650 members know
and will follow. I, for one, like the strength in numbers.

Maybe Vern could just host a file holding site?? This way we could
keep the site where it is but continue to add optional photos and
songs to an alternative site. I think the more important files
should stay here, such as manuals and people to contact and such.
We could keep a text file named the web address to verns place in
the files section so people would immediatly see where to go for
more files. Or maybe in big bold letters we could place it on the
front page introducing the group...I don't know, help!

Since most here have seen the photos of my phase III kit, and it is now
obsolete,( the final cymbal and TP65s just arrived today and I have to find
a good spot for the KORG D1200CD that I picked up last weekend), I will
delete my photos later this afternoon. I don't have any other files, but
every little bit helps.

Re: [DTXpress] Re: moderators, files, and sites

2003-05-16 by Vernon Graner

hmmm weird to come into the forum and find my name in/on a bunch of
posts... :D Anyway...

I do still offer to host the site, the forum and/or whatever the group
wants to use. I have a phorum up already here:

http://www.dtxpressions.com/messages.htm

And I can customize it anyway the group wants. In fact the Drum Center
forum (mentioned as a good example of a forum earlier) seems to also be
running PHPBB so our site could look very simular.

Don't like the way it looks? Thats ok, casue PHPBB is "themeable" (like
WINAMP Skins) so we can use any of a bunch of very snazy looking themes
to make it look unique. Look here for details:

http://www.phpthemes.com

or this site that lets you preview the templates in real time:

http://www.phpbbhacks.com/templatesdemo/

Also, try this link to see another PHPBB site I host for players of the
MMPG Asherons Call:

http://www.holtsouth.com/phpbb2/

I would be happy to delegate the operation of the site to active members
or do it myself if the group doesn't have time. I have a desk jop
(netowkr support engineer) that allows me to work with the site a bit
each day if I need to. :)

As for the message board I'm using (PHPBB), though I think it's pretty
neat, thats not set in stone either. We could go to a WIKI format (see
another group I host at http://www.robotgroup.net to see if you like the
WIKI format better).I can pretty much run whatever forum you like as long
as it runs under LINUX. :)

For file uploads, I could make it possible for some of our members to
place files, but this is a bit tricky since the placing of the files to a
server is a security risk in most cases, so I'd have to see what options
we would have. I could set aside a limited amount of space and

Personally I would greatly prefer to have the group run through the
dtxpressions.com since I think it makes us look more professional and we
are not subject to Yahoo's rules and limits and we'd be much easier to
find! :)

Comments?

Vern,

Does PHPBB forum software support email posting/message delivery?

That would be the key for me -- it's why I like Yahoo groups. You get a
web based forum you can go to when you want, but can read/post/reply to
messages via email. I am a member of so many groups that filtered email
is the only way I can manage it. There's no way I could (or would want)
to surf through a web-based forum just to see all new messages. Plus, I
like being able to archive messages of my choosing on my local
computer.

If email is an option, then I have no objections to moving away from
Yahoo.

Vern....I LOVE the layout of the DTXpressions
forum....REAL TIME would be nice too. What ever this
group decides as a whole I am for.
Thanks for offering your talents to us...perhaps we

You're absolutely correct. We wouldn't want anybody to 'miss the bus'.
We could always leave a trail of breadcrumbs behind; or better yet, a
ton of messages with links to the new home

hey ,
i just went through my photo album on here, and deleted off some
older pics of my gear (removed about 14 pics) i didn't realize i had
that many pics up in there maybe this will help to open up some more
room for new files, and pics .. if everyone works together on this
and stays responsible for removing there files after so long of a
period of time i think that would help out for some of the newer
members, and give them the opportunity to share in the fruits of all
what is available on this group as well..

happy to do my part to add some more room to this site,

up for the poll idea. even if we don't decide to all move, some other
kind of site where we can excahnge pictures would be a very good
idea. i for one have found the pictures very helpful when discussing
peoples kits and even more so now as i am currently considering all
my options before upgrading.

I deleted some old photos and files as well. I think everyone
should do a little summer cleaning with their stuff and maybe we
gain some more space to work with!

Re: [DTXpress] Re: moderators, files, and sites

2003-05-19 by Vernon Graner

Just my $0.02 worth but...

Seems to me we're moving in the *wrong* direction by encouraging people
to remove pictures from the online gallery. I would think the more
pictures we have, the more useful these photo libraries would be to new
and existing users. I know that I've found the photo libraries helpful
for ideas on how to setup my kit on stage, how to arrange the pads, etc.

I think purging these old files runs contrary to the value of the library
and the group as a whole. It just feels like the wrong direction.
Shouldn't we be *adding* resourses, not removing them to fit some
arbitrary limit imposed by some "Yahoo"? (pun intended!) :)

As a new kid on the block, I tend to agree... with a longer term
view, that is. If the removal of images is a short-term measure to
get some space for now while the group figures out the correct forum
for moving on, I think that it's acceptable.

I do agree that the pictures are useful. Everything from setup
ideas, to a little online jealousy!
