More pads than I thought

More pads than I thought

2003-05-19 by Nick Carroll

I feel like a really dummy. I have the standard DTXpress1 kit, plus a
bar pad, and I've only just twigged that I can virtually double the
number of pads on my kit by splitting each stereo input. What I can't
seem to find is a conversion cable plug (two mono jacks to one stereo
plug). I have tried asking at the electronic-part stores here in
Adelaide, Australia, but the best they can come up with is an adaptor
that converts two stereo jacks to one stereo plug. But that doesn't
do the trick - both pads will produce the same sound (i.e. the pad
tuning, not the rim tuning). I'm told I'll have to make up my own
patch cables, which I'd rather not have to do. Can anyone tell me
where I can buy conversion cable plugs online?

Actually, you were right the first time. You can't double your inputs
by splitting the stereo inputs into two. That only works on input
9/10.

Alas, you can't. Search back a couple of weeks in the messages here
if you want to indulge in a little schadenfreude as I thought the
same and was then put to rights.

In short, the stereo inputs are not what you might think at first.
They take one piezo trigger, and a membrane switch (rim/choke). The
switch does not trigger a sound in its own right, but modifies the
sound triggered by the piezo. Therefore they can't be used
independently. The only input that can be split is 9/10, for which
you can get suitable cables from (in the UK, anyway) someone like
Maplin. You need a 1/4" (6.5mm) stereo jack (male) to two 1/4"
(6.5mm) mono plugs (female).

Sorry.

Thanks for pointing that out, Stewart. Now, if only I could join
another pad to a rim... On second thoughts, I'll start saving up for
a second module.
