Free-stand a bell pad?

Free-stand a bell pad?

2003-06-28 by Nick Carroll

I have a bell pad that I don't use because the only place I know how
to mount it is on top of the ride cymbal pad - where hitting it
vibrates through and sets off the ride and rim sound. So I'm trying
to find out how to mount it somewhere else on the DTXpress frame. Can
anyone offer me a hint on how to do this? The attachments that came
with the bell pad do not seem to include anything that will help.

Re: Free-stand a bell pad?

Nick, I know what your talking about and I have thought about a
solution a while back. My first thought was to maybe place a larger
felt underneath the bell pad but I'm not sure if this would
interfere with the wing nut we have to tighten, I think it might. I
also thought of just playing with more finesse, but its hard when
your a rock drummer. So I finally looked up some splash-cymbal
cymbal-arms that would connect to your current boom arms and out
would stick the bell pad. I know this would be ok for a splash
cymbal, but as for a bell sound I'm not sure if it would feel
right. Look up product number CYA5E or MCA63E at drumbalaya to see
what kind of splash cymbal arm I'm talking about. It doesnt matter
which number you look up because you can both arms in the picture.
Just an idea...

I think there's at least one other option, which is to use
a "stacker" - an extension to the tilter that allows a second cymbal
to be added above the first. It may also be that something like an
Aquarian cymbal spring might help. It doesn't go between the
cymbals, but underneath the main one it may "loosen up" the overall
mount so it's less rigid and your bell strike is less likely to
trigger the main pad. I'm also sure that with a little ingenuity, it
would be possible to home-make a tilter extender. An 8mm bolt-
coupler, and an 8mm headless bolt should do it. You'd need to find a
plastic or rubber sleeve for the extension, and some extra felts.

i have added two cups to my kit--one on the ride with the standard
mounting hardware and one on a splash arm--and i don't have any
problems with false triggering--or if i do it's not noticeable
because i try to find a bell sound that fits with the edge sound so,
if i get a small amount of both, that's ok. the splash arm is a good
idea for a splash but i see that you actually want it to be a bell.
did you use all of the standard hardware that comes with the unit? i
only ask because i bought my splash at music-go-round for $5 with no
hardware. the bell hardware replaces the standard neck with a longer
one which allows you to get that gigantic felt in between them. i
think that helps alot. The main thing is to experiment with trigger
settings--in this case the special rejection is key. Mine are

ride: self rejection 4, rejection 2, minVelocity 27, special
rejection (from bell) 7

bell: self rejection 2, rejection 2, minVelocity 10, special
rejection (from ride) 6.

hope that helps.

Nick,
I mounted my bell pad on its own cymbal attachment...I
couldn't get it to mount and play properly at the
time...plus I changed to Visulites that HAS a bell
sound. I use the bell pad for other sounds now, but
it sure saved me a headache mounting it alone.

Jade, not sure what you mean by this. You mounted your bell pad on a
separate cymbal stand? And is Visulites a non-Yamaha brand of cymbal
pad?

Thanks, Pat. I'll play around with your suggestions.

Thanks, UNH. I'll check out those arms as you suggest. By the way,
what is the kit you refer to as the "Chick Magnet"? (Just curious!)

Nick, glad I could provide some ideas. The "chick magnet" kit does
not come within the factory settings, it is something I created and
the settings must be precise!! :)

Re: Free-stand a bell pad?

Thanks, Stewart. I might play around with some extra felts or rubber
sleeves, as you suggest. The other disadvantage about mounting a bell
pad on the standard PCY80S ride cymbal is that it leaves
significantly (for me, anyway) less playing area on the cymbal pad.

Okay, so how have you programmed your pads to create the "Chick
Magnet"? I'm curious to know.
