Canned response

Canned response

2003-08-01 by drumzilla

Got a canned response from Yahoo re: the letter I sent them a couple
days ago with regard to our situation here. After fully informing
them of what the problem was here (Moderator/Owner MIA), they replied
that it was the moderator's/owner's responsibility to police the
group. Well, DUH!

It pissed me off, so I fired off another, sharper letter asking them
if anybody at Yahoo had actually READ my e-mail, or had they just
answered back with a standard blurb based on the subject matter?
Does anybody have a phone number for these goofballs? I swear I'll
call 'em today!!

Zilla,

I got a canned response from my first message to them. I immediately
sent another angry one and was told of the non-interference policy,
advising me to start another group etc. Let's see what you get.

Zilla,

We all appreciate your galiant effort...but like I said earlier. Emails to
the advertisers (MONEY) and CNN (BAD PRESS) are the only way to make this
type of major policy change occur.

Of course we could always have everybody move from here to dtxpression site
and then create seven hundred and thirty two new yahoogroups that are a
variant of this one with seven hundred and thirty two new yahoogroups
moderators. Then each moderator could post one message to his/here group per
day (basically, a reply to the previous days post, saying " yea, good idea")
and consume yahoo storage space and bandwidth.

Back to reality though, So, basically the only way to eliminate the spam is
to open a new yahoo dtx group with restricted membership and move from here
to there. The only problem is that there is a wealth of information in the
past 5000+ post to this group that would be lost forever if this one dies
and is closed. Of course, we move to a dtx restricted membership group, we
would loose the non-registered members that read only and we would find out
very quickly whether there are really 700+ members still in this group or
just 100-200.

p.s. Zilla, what is the effort required on a daily basis to properly
moderate a restricted membership list. How can you tell if someone is really
legit to allow in. Or do you basically allow all in and after their first
spam post, then nuke them from the membership?

OGD asks: "..Zilla, what is the effort required on a daily basis to
properly moderate a restricted membership list. How can you tell if
someone is really legit to allow in. Or do you basically allow all in
and after their first spam post, then nuke them from the membership?"

As you know, I have 700+ members in my group, and close to double the
traffic DTXpress gets each month. Because I was concerned from the
outset of my group that it be kept as squared away as possible, I
committed to keeping a watchful eye on it from the first day.

Honestly, it doesn't take but a few minutes a day to moderate my
group. A few months ago I changed my group to "Restricted
Membership". That means that whenever someone wants to join the
group I have to approve it first. Many times the individual's Yahoo
screen name or e-mail address is a dead giveaway that it's porn-
related or Spam. Those people never make it into the group, PLUS I
put them the "Banned" list provided to me as the group's moderator.
Also, if there's something in a Yahoo profile that looks "iffy", that
person doesn't get in until it's explained to my satisfaction.

On any occassion where anyone has ever posted something inappropriate
I've almost immediately pulled it down, deleted their membership, and
then banned them to prevent them from coming back. (This was prior to
the change to Restricted Membership).

Bottom line: Even a group as large & active as mine doesn't take a
lot of time or effort moderate.

OT: Rush's new album Vapor Trails.. Too loud?

2003-08-01 by Vernon Graner

There is a very interesting article that hits close to home for those of
who remember each of the last decade of albums from Rush. Neil Pert...
need I say more? :)

Anyway, their new album sounds pretty bad, though the music is excellent,
it just didn't seem to sound "good" to me. At first, I thought it was
just my nostalgia kicking in, but then I found the reason for my
discontent in this excellent article that might be of benefit to any of
us who try to record our own musical ambitions... :)

Try this - (408) 349-3300 - that's their office in Sunnyvale, CA.

I'm over on the opposite coast. I knew that Yahoo wouldn't be open
for business yet, but I called the number at 9;30 am, my time, just
to see what I'd get. If you have a question about one of Yahoo's free
services, you get shunted to a recorded message that basically
says, "You're getting this service for free; we don't take calls from
people who don't pay us. Use the 'Help' feature online and send us a
futile email." I will not be able to call later today to deceive a
human being into hearing me out, but I will try between now and
sometime on Monday, unless someone else reports doing so. Just to be
clear, I have no great expectations, but if we are to lose something
that took four years to build, why go down with a whimper? I believe
that OGD's idea of hitting them where their money lives is better,
but it needs greater participation than our recent polls indicate
that we have.

Here's the problem - the office hours are from Monday through Friday, then
they party hardy on the weekends. Try again on Monday. I got through to a
tech person who made sure that my account wasn't cracked.
