Roland Cymbals (CY-6) with Yamaha DTXpress?

Roland Cymbals (CY-6) with Yamaha DTXpress?

2003-08-14 by the_incredible_sphinx

I am using a pair of Roland CY-6 cymbals with my Yamaha DTXpress
module. They are dual-trigger, chokable. For some reason though,
when I strike the playable part of the Roland cymbal, I get either a
very low sound or none at all the closer to the rim I play. If I hit
the hard plastic (unplayable side of the cymbal near the back), I
get the correct sound. is there a way to reverse this so that the
module recognizes the front of the cymbal as the main trigger?
I would also like to thank however it was that answered me on my
previous question with regards to the roland fd-7 pedal. Would you
happen to know what adapter exactly it would be that I should get?
Thanks (I'm new at all of this - i haven't even actually started
playing yet; I've had some trouble getting things going as you can
see) Thanks again!

Sphinx,

First of all, the name of the product, which is Drumbalaya's own, is
YAMDTXROL. It works with DTXpress-II and DTXtreme drum modules and
Roland-style pedals, including the Roland FD-7. You'll have to go to
Drumbalaya's website to order it ($29).

I've run a CY-6 through an Xpress module. The signal wasn't huge, but
it was okay. I assume that the rims are functioning all right, since
you don't mention tham. The fact that you can hear the piezo when you
hit it on the backside is a good omen. You might have to change the
pad-type settings for the CY-6 in the trigger menu for optimum
response. Remember to use a setting that works for stereo cymbals
with choke. Maybe somebody remembers what the options are called. You
may also have to adjust the gain for cymbals upward until you get the
bow to trigger adequately. If that doesn't work, flip up the DIP
switches corresponding the CY-6 inputs on the back of the module
(unfortunately, there are only six; one cymbal may get shortchanged).
Try those strategies first, and let us know.

Hi Ed,

Sorry to ask you such an ignorant question, but what do you mean
by "flip up the DIP switches corresponding the CY-6 inputs on the
back of the module"? What does this mean I am to do? Thank you again.

David,

No problem at all. On the back of the module just to the left of the
top row of inputs and to the right of the MIDI input/output, you'll
notice a small area containing a row of six tiny toggles,
labeled "Input Attenuation," with a H and L position marked; the
toggles should be in the L position. If changing pad types and
raising the gain doesn't work, push the two inputs that correspond
with the CY-6s (if they are plugged into 6 and 7, you can only flip
#6; the second CY-6 will be out of luck unless you swap it to another
input from 1 to 5) to the H position. You may need a pin, if your
finger nails aren't up to the task.
