Playing with PC - Midi

Playing with PC - Midi

2003-12-01 by linkitout

Hi everyone :)
I would like to ask a question to you experts.. sorry if someone
already asked it.
I have a DTXpress 2 connected to PC by midi cable and I want to play
with some new sounds also created by me (I mean, wav files or
something like it).. what's the best way? Should I install something
like Cubase/Sonar or there are easier programs to do this?
If I wasn't enough clear: I play DTX, my pc samples and I hear drum
sounds from pc speakers..

thanks :)

LINK:
If you have a Sound Font capable card in the PC you could just create a
kit for yourself and use almost any sequencer package.
Or you could use a stand alone virtual sampler software, such as this:
http://www.maz-sound.com/vsampler/english/index.html

The only thing that may dissapoint you is the latency between pad strike
and PC sound. All depends on your system and set-up.

If you have wav files or mp3s that you can play on your PC, you can
connect an audio cable from the output on your soundcard and run it
into the aux input on the front of the module (MIDI is irrelevant in
this case). Using the volume knobs nearby, and listening through
headphones (see various recommendations for them on today's board)
you can mix that feed with the kit and play along quite nicely.
Trying to accomplish the same thing in reverse direction through your
PC speakers wouldn't work well, but a proper amp/speaker combination
connected to the output(s) of the DTXpress would. Headphones,
however, are the more considerate option, and the most cost
effective. Plus, the ability to create an airtight musical world
through headphones is one of the most appealing advantages of
edrums.

Hm no, I wasn't clear.
I don't want to play any wav or mp3 from my pc, I only want to use
data that come from midi to trigger drum sounds (ie. snare sound when
I hit snare, crash, ride, and so on) on the pc..
I know that I cannot import any audio file on the DTX, so I want them
play (by MIDI) on the pc..

Yeah, this is what I was thinking about.
I have a SBLive (that is Soundfont capable), can this help with
latency problems or should I set something specific?

The SBLive card can have some severe latency issues. Could be up to up
to half a second, depending on other variables too... Make sure all
driver are up to date, the lowest latency possible on the SBLive card is
27ms. Your best bet is always an ASIO compatible card.

Launch your SB AudioHQ program, and select the Creative Keyboard
program. A piano keyboard should appear on screen (click on the keys!
Fun eh?)
Click on the options button, and select your MIDI input, play your kit,
you should hear whatever sound selected in the Bank/Instrument
selectors.. You can load a sound font in and play them tooo... If you
create your own soundfont, you can play anything you want!

gord.

If someone is intersted in, I have NO latency with SBLive and the KX
Drivers ( http://kxproject.com/ )..
