utility settings

utility settings

2003-12-19 by Creighton Higgins

Every now and then a wise and wizzened member re-posts good hihat
utility settings for offset and splash time. I know i printed these
once, but I am unable to locate this info. I know I should use the
search function and honest I did, but I always have trouble finding
what I'm looking for there. If anyone has any tips on searching- I
would be grateful I think. Thank you all...

Hi Creighton,

I'll answer to wizened, but if I do, you have to as well, because
we're the same age. Anyway, I haven't used a Yamaha hh pedal in a
while, but I seem to remember that when I did, both offset and
sensitivity were set at 0 and the "T" setting at 20 to 32. Do these
strike you as reasonable?

2003-12-22 by Creighton Higgins

oh wizened one
I think the offset was 32 (or minus 32) and the "T" setting was a low
positive setting. I left my reading glasses at home today - what a morning,
don't ask- so I am struggling to read my mail. I have an earlier DTX- the I
with ability to do stereo so I don't have a sensitivity setting unless
you're referring to the dipswitch on the back???
Thanks for your prompt response.

Dear Bad Santa,

My DTXpressI had a dedicated sensitivity parameter for the hihat. It
was located under the drum kit common parameters of the voice mode
(5.?). By the way, I've had some interesting private exchanges with
Bob Giles (I trust you got my private email). The upshot is that I
combined his trigger posts from Electronic Drums into a file here ("A
Short Course"). I wish I had the facility to make the words in this
post bigger for you. If I'd lost my glasses, I'd be hardpressed to
find the computer kyboard at all.

Bless you. I found a store in the neighborhood that sells magnifiers and I
can read again. The glasses look like the ones Lilly Tomlin wore as the
operator on Laugh-In (there's a generational test) so I'm happy that my
office has a door.
I came across some Rogers drums that were literally set out for the trash
lately. Two of the shells have cracks in them and the tom hardware will not
grip so they are truly shot. This breaks my heart- when I was a kid I lusted
for a Rogers set with the Dynasonic snare. Well the snare is in my basement
and I will be looking for a new throw-off on ebay soon. I am going to cut
down the 12" tom and create a mesh head snare. Bob's post is inspiring and I
am thinking I will be trying sensors other than the piezo just for fun.
Thanks for preserving his mail- I will be returning to it. I am interested
in members ideas on how to create a separate rim sensor that won't interact
with the head sensor.

Again- great holiday to all.

OT: Easy Reading Windows tricks(was RE: [DTXpress] Re: utility settings)

Here's tip: if u read your mail in the Mozilla browser, hit CTRL and the
"plus" sign (+) that enlarges the font. If it's IE, choose the "view"
pull-down menu and choose "text Size" and select "larger".

Or, if you need all of windows to display larger fonts, try resetting
Windows itself to "large fonts". To do so, right click on the desktop,
choose properties then choose the appearance tab, then in the "Font Size"
requester, choose "large fonts". Though this can make screen layout look
a bit weird, it should allow you to get through the day till u can bring
your glasses the next day. :)

Of course, if u just want to magnify a few areas to read better, hit
START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/ACCESABILITY and choose "magnifier" to open a
neat little window that enlarges whatever your mouse is hovering over.

Lots of tips like this here:

Vern

PS: I'm assuming you're using windows and/or mozilla.. ;) Also, FWIW, I
did some work for a school district and we had to do this for the
visually impaired students so I researched it a long while back.

I figured if you're smart enough to own a DTXpress kit, then well... ;)
I'm a big fan of Firebird. It's what I'm typing from right now. :)

> I did the best thing- waited till 9:00 and
> walked a block to a store that sells reading glasses.

If I forgot/lost my glasses I'd be non-functional. I'm rather near
sighted. Anything within 14-20" of my nose is perfectly clear, farther
away is mush. I can't just pop into a store to get glasses, I have to
carry a spare set in the car "just in case". I guess you're lucky if you
can operate w/o glasses to do things like play drums. If I get
"energetic" my glasses can slide down my nose. grrr.

One of the only pictures I have of myself on stage at one of the biggest
shows I played, has me with my glasses perched precariously on the tip of
my nose. I'm a slave to my glasses. And before u ask, yes I did contacts
(too much cost/hassle/health issues) and I'm not about to let some
"Doctor" (what do u call the guy who graduates last in his class from
medical school? Doctor!) with a razor sharp scalpel near my eyes, thank
you!

To quote a very famous song writer:

"What a drag it is, getting old."
