Dilemma

Dilemma

2003-12-26 by davebooth@1stcounsel.com

Hello all,
For xmas today my wife bought me the lovely DTXpressII kit. I had
mentioned to her in passing that I was considering buying an
electronic drum set, and (surprisingly) she hooked me up. Admittedly
I had been looking at the Roland kits and wasn't really aware of the
Yamaha.

Trouble is I'm wondering if the Yamaha is what I really want. I'm
not finding much information on the 'net about any expansion
possibilities, like if I want to add a ride cymbal or additional
toms. I'm a beginner so I'm sure this'll do fine for now, but what
about the future?

Hello Dave,

If budget/quality was any kind of consideration, your wife did good.
The Roland kits built around the TD-6 module and the DTXpressII are
similar enough to be considered rivals, although the Yamaha has
slightly more bang for the buck, and many people find that it plays
better. When it comes to expansion, the DTXpress is basically in the
same boat as virtually every other electronic kit out of the box.
Chances are that you'll want it to be larger eventually, and the
expansion possibilities as delivered are limited. The DTXPress has
two extra single-zone slots--accessed through a single input, labeled
9/10-- which will accept two pads of your choice or a single pad with
two zones (like certain snares and certain ride cymbals). Many people
end up with two modules to achieve a comfortable kit size. Anyway,
that's the simple answer (it can get more complicated). As of now,
you could add another cymbal and a tom, two toms, or two cymbals.
