I'm About To Jump........!

I'm About To Jump........!

2003-12-23 by jonddf

Hi everbody. I'm a new member on DTXPRESS residing in Leeds, UK. I've
been checking out this group lately and thought it was about time to
join, particularly as I'm seriously thinking about getting an
electronic kit. I've been drumming since school (way back!) and my
two sons are interested, with the eldest(17) now playing in a band.
The DTX2 appeals to me because you appear to get a lot for the price.
Also - and this is only my opinion - I think the DTX sounds better
and is more playable than Roland V drums. I've played both down at
the local drum stores and the Yamaha seems to sound and feel
better......but I guess I'm preaching to the converted here! Any
comments people might have would be gratefully received. Also, has
anyone any thoughts on DTX2 pricing policy in view of the forthcoming
release of DTX3? A DTX2 can be had for £725 here in the UK - a
bargain in my opinion. Look forward to your comments.

Hi Jon,

Welcome to you and your two sons. I'll let our UK members reply about
the relative prices and availability of the XpressII in your neck of
the woods, but it seems to me that if you can find a II at this point
at a good price and don't want to wait for the III, jump at it. The
II is in short supply in the US, and I was under the impression that
is was in the UK as well. Even if you've seen it advertised, it could
be backordered.

Making a firm prediction about the II's pricing in light of its lame-
duck status isn't easy (assuming that you can find one). After the
III launches, the cost of any remaining IIs will undoubtedly go down,
but not necessarily quickly. Since both the STD and SP versions of
the III appear slated to have a selling price higher than the II's,
all three kits could conceivably co-exist for a while, at least
unofficially, as entry-level, intermediate-level, and upper-level
Xpress options, leaving the II's price largely intact. Couple that
possibility with a release date of apparently March at the earliest
for the III, and the waiting game for a price break could go on a
long time. But these are speculations on my part.

Personally, I'm intrigued about the vaunted improvement in the
module's sounds, especially the cymbal sounds, which always seemed
the weakest in the arsenal. Don't get me wrong; Plenty of them were
good, but not in the same proportion as the drum and percussion ones.
If you can live w/o the latest sonic enhancements, and aren't keen on
having the new round cymbals and hi hat, however, the II would look
even better in your case.

Thanks for the welcoming comments.
Regarding the DTX3 - from pictures I've seen on Japanese
websites (check out: http://www.gakki.com/shop3/yamaha_dtx.html) it
looks like there are four models in the range, the Standard, Standard
Plus, Special and Special Plus with the 'Standard' looking very
similar to the DTX2 although I guess the brain module will be new.
I'll certainly be checking out the availability of the DTX2 in light
of what you say and look forward to further discussion with DTX
members.........Merry Christmas to one and all!

Merry Christmas, Jon. I think that the "Plus" versions of the two
IIIs are simply the particular store's addition of a throne (and kick
pedal?) to each. Yamaha has only two versions of the III, leaving
buyers to select their own seats.

I personaly hate the idea of an included throne or pedal...for the money, I'd rather chose my own...its like includeing crap cymbals with a drumset...I'd rather have the cash...and find a used better one at a pawn shop...

When the DTXtreme came out, Japan had many models available but the
US and Canada only had 2.
http://www.yamaha.co.jp/product/drum/dtx/dtxtreme/dtxtreme.html
This link shows all the sets they sold in Japan. Canada and US sold
the first 2.(Special and Special+a)
I got my kit from a store in Canada. I've got the "standard" kit(all
8" toms) with the rack from the "special" kit? The guy's at the store
are pretty clueless as to how they got this odd kit but I love it!
Anyone else out there have a DTXtreme with all 8" toms?
Merry X-mas

G.

I noticed that, too. There was a jazz model, for instance, with four
8" toms. I also noticed that Canadian stores had some eccentric
models. Go figure.

Tell your local drums store to have a look at the picture at our site
and run a search on DTXpressIII for ample evidence of what's coming.
In all fairness, given what Dave Jewell told me, it's not surprising
that the store would be unaware of it; apparently, we found out
before most of the dealers did, much to Yamaha's embarrassment. As
OGD exclaimed, "Haven't they ever heard of the internet?"

I own a DTXpress II, what's better in III? the round cymbals offer
some more? or sounds up-to-date ?

The round cymbals, one of which offers the opportunity for bell, bow,
and edge; the round hi hat on a traditional stand, which, in
principle, would seem to be an improvement over the rack-mounted pad
(though not to everyone); a curved rack, which folds up with pads on
it for convenient storage and/or transport; the new sounds in the
module, especially for cymbals; and maybe a few other things as well.
It remains to be seen whether the changes to the IIISP will have
DTXpressII users selling their kits to buy the latest model.
