the most "realistic" drum recording with DTXpress kit ??? [trigger other sounds]

2004-01-17 by gollywillickers

can anyone point me to the most "realistic" drum performance/ recording /
mp3 made with a DTXpress kit ?

i've listened to a few of the mp3's in the "FILES" section. the performances
sound great but the sounds are not always very realistic.

i am making a recording with the DTXpressII kit that is available here and may
buy one for myself. but right now i just want to see what this setup is capable
of and how i can get the most out of it.

i'll be recording to computer and am considering triggering sounds from a
NON-DTX source.

i am considering recording both MIDI and AUDIO from the DTXpress and
using other SAMPLED drum sounds from maybe "SAMPLETANK" or
something instead of the sounds from the module - or maybe a MIX of both
module sounds and other external SAMPLED sounds.

anyone doing that?

Yes, I am doing this.

I use sounds from the DTX and samples from my Yamaha A3000 sampler and a Kawai XD5 drum synth.

I mainly use Bob Clearmountntain's and Ross Garfield's drum sample material in the A3000 when I want 'real' drum sounds, which honestly is not that often for my style of music. In my lowly opinion, these are some of the best drum sound CDs you can get. Well worth the $$$ spent.

thanks for the links. there is a cool 'Flash' sound player on the Clearmountain
site.

do you have any MP3s or any final product where a DTXpressII was used to
trigger external sounds?

I just have to find them, as I am still in the process of unpacking all
my stuff from the move.
I do usually record real cymbals rather than triggered ones when I am
going for "real" drum kit sound though. I find no module can even
remotely sound right for hi-hats.
My music I do now is electronic.. kinda like Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk
mixed... and my corporate work is varied and clients don't seem to care
if it sounds 'too' real. SO I have nothing too current to show you
anyways. Actually, come to think of it I used a D4 for the trigger
interface back then, though I still had the A3000 and the XD5.. the DTX
didn't come 'till later.

Back when I did the recordings, I was doing more of a power-pop, heavy,
guitar based stuff.. three different bands.. AND jobbing for a 50's -
60's band (though that job was done using an old 60's era Rogers kit I
used to have.. I miss it) I'll continue to look.
