Headphones

Headphones

2004-02-18 by Jay

Yeah, i know this topic has been beaten into the ground. but i'm looking for some
different info. my band has switched to all headphones. all 4 of us wear them now, so the
only thing you hear when you walk into our "studio" (actually it's just a shed in my back
yard. heh) is the sound of really terrible singing and sticks hitting 8 inch rubber pads.
hehehe. but i digress...
here's the problem: we all wear cans, but we want the ability to adjust the levels of each
instrument independently without affecting the mix being recorded. i've heard about a
headphone distribution system that can do it, something connected by ethernet cables?
does anyone out there use something like this? anyone have any brilliant suggestions? it is
almost surreal playing this way. it's like we're listening to a perfectly mixed CD when we
jam. it's nice and all, but sometimes we all want to hear our own instruments scream
above the noise and confusion, sort of like when you're playing with REAL amps and REAL
drums ;)

I don't know anything about an ethernet system that can adust
relative volumes, but there seems to be at least one unit that can
take a mix from eight inputs and allow a subordinate mix to each of
eight different outputs: http://tinyurl.com/29xr6. Is this something
like what you have in mind?

Weird. I got a File Not Found error on that page. Where was that link
to that you sent? What was it? This is the thing that I am
considering:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=040219062638063073155001310275/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/241501/

In case there's any issues with that URL, it's a Furman HDS-6
Headphone Distribution Amp. From MusiciansFriend.com:

"Allows every artist to have a personalized headphone mix independent
of the board. Perfect for studio, rehearsals, and use as a powered
monitor system on stage. The rackmount HDS-6 connects to the console
and provides the interface and amplification to drive a chain of up to
8 HR-6 Personal Headphone Mixers. HDS-6 to HR-6 linking is provided by
inexpensive Ethernet computer cables (one set included). The HDS-6
also provides Ground lift, on-off switches, power-on LED, Overload
LEDs for each channel, and a Link Cables Reversed indicator. The HDS-6
System comes with one HR-6 mixer. Additional mixers available
separately. "

This sounds pretty cool to me, but I was just wondering if there are
any alternatives to this.

Thanks for your help!

The Furman does look good, and the price is right. The one that I
meant is a Shure, the Auxpander, and its upfront cost is considerably
higher. The wild card is how much the remote mixers cost for the
Furman. The full link to the Shure is:

Hey Jay

I think I would go with a simpler approach, something
like this Headphones amp

http://tinyurl.com/ysqqb
or
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=040219073958148244068034343115/g=live/search/detail/base_pid/180615/

much cheaper, but well I play alone or with maybe a
friend sometimes, so I would not ever spend nearly
400dlls for such equipment, if you walk by my house
you will either hear some really horrible singing, or
some sticks hitting rubber pads, in a rather
inconsistent manner..... well I hope to be of some
help.

Pedro.

Re: Headphones

2004-02-19 by Jay

Yeah, we're gonna use a headphone amp for a short term solution. Our
guitarist was in a 'professional' studio a few weeks ago and that's
where he saw the headphone distribution setup. We all want to hear
ourselves louder than the final mix, so it looks like we're gonna have
to come up with a serious chunk of change to do it. :(
