DTXpress Convention, Feb. 27-28, 2004

2004-02-29 by Ed Freedman

The first-ever DTXpress Group Convention took place on February 27-28 in Norfolk, Massachusetts, USA. Representatives came from two countries. Various products from Yamaha, Pintech, ddrum, Visu-lite, Drum Tech, Pearl, Axis, and others were on hand for attendees to audition. Milk and beer spilled profusely throughout the ceremonies, thankfully with little crying. Entertainment was provided by the Norfolk Mime and Ballet Troupe as well as the jazz outfit Weather Report , which reunited specifically for the occasion. In the words of British member Stewart Manley, "There's nothing like a well-planned, lavish event to bring cheer to the heart, and this is nothing like a well-planned, lavish event." Mr Manley is renowned throughout the DTXpress community for his ready wit. Building on this year's success, the group is hoping to draw an unprecedented three members when next convened.

Just when I thought the group was getting a bit quiet! :-)

I Take it Stewart was 'IN THE HOUSE' and you guys jammed to WR?
When's next year's well-planned (unplanned) and lavish (sparse) event?

Stephen,

Stewart was indeed "in the house." We listened to a variety of jazz
records that he and I had discussed via email--Brian Auger, Miles
Davis (Cookin at the Plugged Nickel), and a bunch of live WR material
(8:30 and Live and Unreleased). Our actual e-drum time was limited,
but Stewart was able to get an idea of how Visu-lite cymbals, Pintech
mesh pads, et al. sound through a ddrum module.

My wife had such a good time during Stewart's visit, she came up with
the idea that group members should pool a little money and rent an
affordable meetingplace. If we were going to make it an international
affair, we'd probably have to meet halfway, or at least in Bermuda,
and if we wanted to do more than just chat, which is what we do
online, we'd have to raise some money to stock the room with food
(not so important) and drum equipment (more important). It could be
like gathering at Guitar Center (just kidding, McConaghy). Feasible,
huh? As it is, I hope that we can continue to have the type of
guerilla convention that Stewart and I had more often. Highly
recommended.

Yes, and no, reading from left to right. Ed and his wife kindly
offered me the opportunity to go visit while I was nearby in the US
on business last weekend. Sadly it was only a short convention as I
had a 9am Sunday flight from JFK, but the British contingent had a
marvellous time. Although it wasn't all good news: playing with Ed's
ddrum4 and Pintech CCs gave my credit cards another reason to
overheat.

By the way, I did get a chance to listen to your stuff, Stephen,
which was great...

Ed:
Bermuda? Excellent.
There are really only two places I visit on the web. This one and
Drum Center Forum (super nice, intelligent, mature folks -
drumcenterforum.com). The DCI forum is sponsored by the Drum Center
of Indianapolis. It's owner, Harry Cagnagy, is Modern Drummer
Magazine's historian.
DCI members regularly meet in different parts of the country for get
togethers. There was one last week in SF. I've gone to the one in
Indy. We met at the store for a swap meet, then went to member's home
to jam and eat BBQ.
It was great fun to play and talk with fellow drummers, and even
better to meet them after chatting with them online for years.
Bermuda? Yeah, but only if there are some kits set up.

Do visit the DCI Forum. There are many Pros (recording and touring)
that are members, as well as many industry reps. There's no a lot of
discussion about e-drums, but there's a wealth of information about
playing in general.

If you do go there, I'm B.B.Boomer.

"Aw, shucks. Twarn't nuthin'." Stephen says in his humble, hillbilly
accent.
