Question about an older Yamaha MIDI drum brain....

Question about an older Yamaha MIDI drum brain....

2004-03-03 by Tom Kemp, Bass

Does anybody here have experience with Yamaha's PMC1 trigger converter with it's XLR inputs for each pad? I am wondering whether or not standard triggers could be used/adapted with this particular unit.
I have a small home studio, and am thinking about adding a handful of pads for additional rythmic instruments and effects, plus adding triggers to our drummer's hardware as more or less an experiment in recording. I have a single trigger in my possession now, but it's modern...uses the 1/4" jack to plug in....and have an opportunity to get my hands on this old Yamaha PMC1 converter cheap... If I can make it work with an adapter to the XLR cable, then it would be more than what I need for this situation.
Thanks in advance, guys!

Hey Tom,

Since no one's rushing to answer your question definitively, I can't
imagine that it wouldn't work, given the adaptor. I should mention,
however, that I haven't tried it. I have heard, however, that certain
older Roland pads did not appear to be compatible with the PMC1 for
some reason, but you are unlikely to have that problem. Hopefully,
someone with firsthand experience will agree with me.

I used to use one of these with Simmons pads, MPC pads (I still have
the analogue 2 channel module for those somewhere. Hmm...) and
latterly some Roland pads (PD-5 I think). I never had a problem
with any of them. For the Rolands I had to wire some jack-XLR
cables up but I couldn't tell you what pins to use although I know
that one of the three isn't used.

The only thing the PMC1 really lacks is a hi-hat controller of any
sort. I sold it with some pads to a friend who wanted to use it
with his acoustic kit for e-tymps and effects in a club band and
still does as far as I know. I wish I'd kept it in many ways as it
was a good, solid, reliable unit and I could've used it to add extra
inputs to my DTXpress.
