a little help for a newbi?

a little help for a newbi?

2004-03-09 by philsiu02

Hi,
Im sure many of you have experienced the same level of frustration I
have.
I buy an acoustic kit and complaints about noise come flooding in.
The only thing I could do to stop it was to put pads on the kit. This
just ddn't feel right.
Now im a student I cant have my kit with me at university (space and
noise problems) so last I bought the yamaha DD-55, it was good for a
while if a little frustrating due to the permanant pad set up,
trigger problems and those pesky bass and hihat pads that run away
from you.
I've finally given up and bought a Ex-Demo DTXpress II for a very
good price.
This leads on to my question - For some reason (unknown to me) the
kick pad is one from the old DTX so im looking to upgrade to the KP65
as I have a very nice double bass pedal. I was planning on using the
spare, old kick tower as an extra trigger in jack 9 and buying a
single zone pad as an extra tom. Before I go ahead and buy these
things i need to know if, when i buy a pad, the cables come with it
(not too much of a problem, cables are easy enough to get) but more
importantly DOES THE CLAMP TO LINK A NEW TOM TO THE FRAME COME WITH A
NEW PAD? I cant find the clamps anywhere so im assuming they do but i
dont want to waste money buying a pad I cant mount.

Sorry there was alot of useless information in there. Only the
sentance in capitals is actually important.

Thanks in advance

Phil

The rack clamps do not come with the pads. The cable does come with the
pads. The TPCL65 ($26US) is the clamp for the tom pads and the CYAT65
($34US) is the arm/clamp for a cymbal pad. They are available online.

Thanks alot. Im off to look for a UK supplier now.

Just checking it is possible to have the input from a spare tom and
the input of the old kick pad put together for a sterio connection in
jack 9/10 of the DTX II. Is is possible?

Thanks

Yes, it is called an insert cable that will split to two mono's from one
stereo.

There are several UK members here, that should pipe up any second to give
you help with locating a local vendor.

If only that were the case. I've tried in the past to find anywhere
here in the UK that sells the TPCL65 and CYAT65 but to no avail.
I've just had another quick look online and again have come up with
nothing.

All is not lost however as the rack is a standard 1.5" tubing and
many clamps from other manufacturers fit. I have a Gibraltar-a-like
made by Stagg which I got from my local drum shop for (if memory
serves) £11.99. This holds practically anything you can think of.
I use mine to hold a boom for an extra cymbal pad but you'd need a
Yamaha tom holder for a tom pad obviously. I'm not sure of the cost
of those.

The clamp is this one - www.staggmusic.com/image.php?id=11777

You can always try this page

http://www.piedog.com/PDGShop.asp?WCI=htmDeptProducts&WCU=DEPT%5FPKEY%3D77

They do the TCPL80 but it will cost you around #30

does anybody know if the Roland MDH10 will fit as that is only #18 for the
pad mount.

Roland and Pintech L-rods will work just fine for Yamaha pads, as
will Gibraltar. Yamaha's advantage is that the hex rods stop the
pads rotating - which is important for their acoustic toms but not
that crucial for e-pads. You can lock down the Yamaha pads onto a
round L-rod just fine.

As you say, you can get Gibraltar power clamps for about £11 (I get
mine from Drumwright, but ADC does 'em online for £15 delivered),
and l-rods for a few pounds too. As ever, eBay can be your friend if
you're careful. There are few clamps to be had in the UK but plenty
in the US. A couple of dealers will ship to the UK, or you could do
what I do which is have them delivered to colleagues or friends in
the US and posted (or hand carried) from there. Just don't put 'em
in your hand luggage...

I've often wondered if that was the case so thanks for clearing that
up.

Of course, after a couple of Stellas I promptly had a crisis of
confidence and went and tried it out. B*gger me if I can't get the
Yamaha pad onto the Pintech L-rod. It just doesn't fit onto the rod.

I don't know what possessed me. Excuse me, I'll just pop off and
beat myself to death with a velcro cable tie...

No clue, I'm afraid. I don't have any Roland rods. Perhaps that's
what I was thinking of, but without evidence I would be hesitant to
take a gamble.
